It is impossible to upload our maps in a GPS because they are too large being raster maps and are SoftMap proprietary format, unreadable by other software. The manufacturers of the GPS receivers normally restrict the upload to their own map format and the GPS receivers have sometimes limited memory.

Garmin software can upload vector maps (i.e. those consisting of drawn lines). However, Garmin have not published the interface protocol for uploading vector maps and so this function is not supported in GPS Utility. The best you can do with GPS Utility is to create tracks which can be used as 'pseudo maps'. You can do this by digitising tracks using scanned maps - see the Help topics 'mapping' and 'digitising'. Pick one; they're all good. Any GPS receiver that can get pick up enough GPS satellites to get a fix on your position will work fine. Most people choose a GPS receiver in terms of what other uses they can make of it beyond wardriving. The GPS receiver is not required, although it helps a lot to pinpoint the exact location. If you do not have a GPS and cannot borrow one, make sure you have a very detailed map of the area, a good compass, and good navigation skills. A USB cable and the presence of USB connections are not yet adequate for exchanging data successfully. However, data transfer can be effected using a USB cable if a serial COM Port is emulated by the GPS receiver. Not necessarily, GPSViewer, Wayviewer, and LocViewer work with almost any factory setting. Nevertheless it is reasonable to let the GPS receiver send exactly the data which are also processed afterwards, in order to not waste the reduceded computing power of the mobile phones. GPSViewer, Wayviewer, and LocViewer are able to process the NMEA 0183 sentences GGA, VTG, and RMC. This question is often preceded by "How often does OmniSTAR transmit corrections"? The perception is that a user will only get a position fix when a new correction is received from OmniSTAR.
