The Document Object Model, commonly referred to as DOM, is another by-product of the W3C recommendations for XML standards (or any content with similar structure, such as HTML, SGML, etc.). A DOM uses standard syntax to describe a document as a hierarchical series of objects. It identifies each element in an XML document as an individual object, and defines the hierarchical relationship of those objects within the document.

This is the collection of objects provided by each browser. Basically, any object in the window hierarchy is part of the DOM. This means that document.writeln(), for example, is not a javascript method but is, in fact, a method provided by the DOM. The DOM has been standardised by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C); however, like all W3C standards, browser support is not yet complete.

Document/View is a specialization of MVC, in which the Model is the Document, and the View and the Controller are combined into the View. In MVC the Controller takes care of user interaction with the View - how the view is changed. Because most GUI's contain widgets or controls which already take care of user interaction (e.g. You can click on a combo box to change it's contents) I don't see any sense in having a separate controller.

ontology is a model of entity and relationship in a specific domain or universe of discourse (UoD).
