Before seeing any medical specialist, you should talk to your family doctor, or general practitioner (GP), who can discuss your condition with you and advise on whether specialist care is appropriate. He or she can help you choose the specialist best suited to your needs. Your GP can help the specialist to care for you by providing relevant information about your health. If you wish, you can request that your GP refer you to your preferred specialist.

FAR 61.53 mandates you not fly as Pilot In Command or as an essential crew member if you develop a medical condition which prevents you from safely performing your flight duties. Until you wish to resume PIC or essential crew member duties, your condition does not need to be reported to the FAA.

Medical records are official records of hospital activity and are considered hospital property. If you want to see your records while you are in the hospital, you may request a copy from the Customer Service office at (859) 323-8951. If you want a copy after leaving the hospital, contact the UK Hospital Medical Records department at (859) 323-5117. The first copy of your medical record is free of charge to you or anyone you allow to obtain a copy.

Your former doctor is expected to, as continuity of care, to provide a summary or report of your medical record to the new treating doctor. To arrange this, speak or write to your former doctor, provide the name of your new doctor and request that the records be transferred. Also, provide your new doctor with the address and phone number of your old doctor Some doctors may charge a fee for handling and copying their records, especially if your history is long and / or complex.

Once you are enrolled in the group medical insurance, you will receive an insurance card from the Department of Human Resources. Many medical establishments in the BVI accept this card. That means they will prepare a claim form for you, send it to the insurance company, and you will be asked to pay only your deductible/co-payment at the time of service. However, if you go to a doctor who does not accept the card, you will be asked to pay the full amount.
