Laboratory tests may or may not be necessary before starting medication therapy. Depending on your medical history and the medication you will use, your clinician may want you to have some blood tests and an electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG).

Before starting Heartworm prevention, veterinarians test to make sure the pet doesn’t already have a Heartworm infection. Giving Heartworm disease prevention medications to pets that already have infections can cause severe illness, or death. Pets less than 7 months old can begin Heartworm prevention without testing but the vet may recommend testing 4-7 months after starting the medication.

Most people are eventually able to live comfortably without drugs. Those who still need medication are usually able to significantly reduce the amount taken.

Once a recommendation is made by your physician that hyperbaric oxygen is indicated, a chest X-ray is normally necessary prior to starting. There are two main blood tests that many doctors will want to do as soon as possible. Both of these tests will give you and your doctor baseline information about how HIV is affecting your body now. Test results will allow you and your doctor to determine if and when you should consider starting treatment. Testing regularly will help determined any major changes - good or bad - in your immune system. Ultimately the decision about starting treatment is yours to make.
