Almost certainly because your HDTV doesn't support 480i video on the component inputs to which your Xbox is attached. See the "See Also" question for more information.

The Xbox Dashboard appears when you turn on your Xbox console without a disc in the disc tray. The dashboard will let you adjust system settings, including audio, video, language and memory management and it also lets you save games.

You don't need to get rid of this link to run Linux. If you do the MechAssault trick, then 'Install Linux' will replace 'XBox Live' with 'Linux' on its own. If you do the "Hardware Modification" with a modchip that selects between Microsoft's BIOS and Cromwell, then you could care less that XBox Linux is an option on the Dashboard. If your mod chip has a switch that lets you choose between an alternative Linux friendly BIOS (ex Cromwell) and Microsoft's BIOS, then XBox Connect will work fine.

HDTV (High-definition television) is a new system of television that improves both production and reception of broadcasts for a picture quality up to 10 times better than standard definition. HDTV features increased lines of resolution and an improved aspect ratio (relationship of width:height): 16:9 as opposed to the 4:3 ratio of conventional screens.

I'm really interested in getting linux onto my xbox. I have the action replay software setup on my pc, an xbox controller hooked up to the pc with the memory card in the controller. I know it works because I have put many savegames onto the memory card this way. My problem is that I cannot find the savegames I need. I tried using the tutorial that explains how to get the needed savegames with all the zipping, original folder, updated folder, udata, etc. None of it is working.

This is a progressive-scan resolution, more-or-less identical to that produced by a progressive-scan DVD player. Format is 640x480 progressive-scan. This is a special type of 480p signal intended for display in a 16:9 aspect ratio. Format is 640x480 "anamorphic" (horizontally compressed) progressive-scan. COMPUTER MONITORS: Many computer monitors will support this mode, but you may have to use vertical size controls to adjust the aspect ratio.

You can use a regular video cable Y-splitter and send a split of the GREEN component cable to a composite input of your TV. If you switch to that composite input, you should be able to see the dashboard, albeit in black and white. When you're ready to play a game, just switch the TV back to the component inputs.

You need a HDTV-compatible television with Y/Pb/Pr component inputs and the HD A/V pack. Note that some non-HDTV television sets have component inputs and support 480p. These TVs are fine choices for playing today's 480p games, but will not be able to take advantage of 720p or 1080i resolutions. Alternatively, you can connect the Xbox directly to a PC monitor. You will need the HD A/V pack and a component-to-vga converter.

First you need to plug everything in. If you’re using the component HD AV cable you plug the red, green, and blue RCA cables into the respective inputs on your display. If you’re using the VGA HD AV cable, you’ll plug the single connector into the respective input. If you’re using component, be sure to flip the switch on the Xbox connector side to the “HD” setting. If you don’t, you won’t get high definition resolutions available in the dashboard.

Alert Boxes in the Dashboard give a visual representation of the most recent alerts generated by the monitoring. The size of the box represents how recently the alert occurred where the largest box is the most recent alert. The color of the box represents the severity of the alert, if a box is lighter in color it means the alert has been acknowledged.
