A:Intense pulsed light is a term often used interchangeably with the term "laser" when in fact the two are very different. Lasers emit a single beam of light at a very specific wavelength (like a laser pointer), whereas IPL contains light of all visible wavelengths (more like a light bulb). As a result, the IPL is able to treat a wide range of skin conditions at a superficial level, but does not have the ability to target specific structures, especially those that are deeper in the skin.

Intense Pulsed Light ( I.P.L.) is a visible light source which is attracted to the melanin found in hair.

IPL or Pulsed Light Systems work in the same way as Lasers but are not Lasers. The main difference between a laser and a pulsed-light system is that lasers produce a beam of light at a specific wavelength (or colour), with specific characteristics that make them mostly suitable for a specific treatment only.

This simple reason for this is due to the high acquisition cost of machines, maintenance and the materials used during these treatments are also very costly.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) treatment, which is very common around the Phoenix Valley, is generally referred to as laser hair removal, even though it does not use a true laser. IPL machines have a shorter wavelength than most lasers and are not as effective at targeting deeper, thicker hair; they are more successful when used to remove fine, thin hairs with shallow roots.

Laser hair removal treatments work by emitting a controlled heat source via a beam or beams of light, to the hair, which is then selectively absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the hair, this damages the root disabling its activity and delivering long-term results. After repeated treatments the subsequent damage to the hair follicle results in progressive hair reduction. Hair follicles are at various stages of growth, mostly in the changing and resting stage (catagen and telogen).

The length of a single treatment depends on the size and characteristics of the birthmark. Using IPL, treatment of a large facial birthmark may take about 30 minutes, with a series of treatments required for the maximum effect.

Sunlight is a mixture of seven different colors, whereas Laser light is always of one single color (monochromatic). Sunlight is disorderly whereas laser beam is very orderly (coherent). Sunlight is not parallel whereas laser light runs parallel (collimated). The healing properties of Laser beam come from these differences.

Answer: It is up to the State in which you practice. The FDA will classify the majority of Medical / Surgical Lasers as Class IV devices and the majority of the IPL systems as Class II. Based on the FDA classifications each State will determine the rules that govern the use of the system.
