The first step is the Basic Personal Protection Course, which takes eight hours. This is normally done in two four-hour sessions on two days. Once you complete this course, you get a certificate from us, which you take to the Department of Safety, at a Driver's License Examining Station. They will fingerprint and photograph you, do a background investigation, and issue you a Handgun Carry Permit, in 60 to 90 days.

Your permit is valid anywhere in the State of Tennessee.
