Snow removal was done by High School custodians and Buildings and Grounds employees. It will be improved for the winter of 2006/2007 -- there were a few problems this past winter stemming from miscommunications between the two groups. A snow fighter meeting will be held in late October 2006, between the two groups to make sure assignments are clearly understood.

The Department of Public Works and Environmental Services is responsible for snow removal at most general county facilities (governmental centers, public safety and judicial complex, libraries, health, community centers, and the like). Clearing is performed on a priority basis, with government centers and public safety facilities having highest priority. According to the Streets Bylaw, residents are responsible for removing ice and snow from their sidewalks within 24 hours of a snowfall. If a sidewalk is not shovelled, The City can issue the resident a notice to clear the sidewalk. If the resident does not comply, The City will clear the sidewalk and a flat rate of $115 for all types of property will be charged for sidewalks that can be cleaned within one hour. Time in excess of this is at the hourly rate of $85 per hour plus G.S.T.

According to the HOA's contract with Genesis, 2 inches of measurable snow must fall before the streets are plowed and treated with sand. Sanding may occur without plowing at the discretion of the snow plow company.

Our community contracts with Valley Crest to conduct snow removal and sanding on an as needed basis. Snow removal on a county road during a snow storm is performed in a planned, organized procedure by the Cape May County Road Department. If a reasonable period of time has elapsed and you feel that you have not received attention, please call the Public Works Department at (609) 465-1035, between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

A number of communities in snowy areas have installed roundabouts, including Hamilton, Ontario; Kemptville, Ontario; Howard (Green Bay), Wisconsin; Montpelier, Vermont; and Vail, Colorado. Traffic and safety concerns make nighttime the best time for our operators to be out. While our tractors are light and highly maneuverable, they are constantly backing out of driveways. Operating during the middle of the night allows us to work quickly and without the risk or delays of vehicular traffic.

In the event of heavy snow, snow cleared from the roadway may fall on and cover the trail where it is closer than 10 ft. from the road. Under those circumstances, the City will plow that portion of the trail. In normal snowfall, snow from the roadway should not be an issue.

Pavers can be plowed or shoveled just like concrete or asphalt flooring. Do not chop or use sharp objects to break away any ice on the surface of your paved surface. Although salt will not damage your pavers, non-corrosive de-icing products are recommended

Yes. Crews are dispatched to the City’s main arteries first and then clear residential streets.
