In either early Spring or throughout the Fall. The reason is that the soil temperature is low and the tree's roots can easily acclimate to the new soil where it will live for the rest of its life without stress. It takes about 30-45 days for a tree to root-in and begin living on its own without the additional care required to sustain its life. If a drought would occur, a minimum of 25 gallons or 1" of water would be required per tree per week to keep them alive.

June is a great month to plant trees, shrubs and groundcovers. Pay close attention to their watering requirements because their root systems will be in the original soil ball of the plant for the first several months. Note that these plants may require an occasional hand watering until they begin to establish.

Spring is an ideal time to plant new citrus trees. Garden centers have a good supply to pick from, and the trees are ready to begin root and shoot growth. Make sure you give the new tree a sunny site and space the trees at least 12 to 15 feet apart. If you miss the spring planting season, don't worry. Container-grown trees are available year-round. They can be added to the landscape anytime.

The old arborist saying goes, “the best time to prune is when the pruners are sharp,” meaning that trees can be pruned at any time. This is still true for most trees, although there are some points to consider and some limited exceptions to the rule.

The choice over whether to divide large plants really depends on your growing goals and situation. You may wish to grow the plant into a larger 'specimen plant' that will produce larger and more flowers reliably, or you may want to produce divisions for trade or sale if the plant is in demand. Because most of our plants 'work by producing seed, we are very hesitant to divide them unless they fall apart at a division point when they are repotted.

Spring and summer give us the best opportunities to identify tree health problems, since a cursory inspection can tell whether the tree "looks" healthy compared to previous years or nearby trees of the same species. Diagnosis of the actual cause of the tree malady is a tricky business best left to an expert. As with human illness, prompt detection and treatment can be critical.

Successful planting can take place any time of the year; however, there are advantages and disadvantages to every season. Fall and winter planting require less watering and are less stressful on plants due to the fact that plants are entering dormancy. The availability of some types of plants, such as trees, is also at its peak in fall and winter. The warmer ground and wet weather of spring are also ideal for planting.

Our trees are grown from specially selected nursery seeds. We move the trees from the nursery to the field for planting in June-July when the rainy season which begins in May is well underway.

February is a great month for planting fruit trees, blackberries, grapes and any other bareroot fruit stock that is for our area. During this month, finish transplanting established shrubs, trees and native plants that need to be moved during the dormant season.

Generally, applying a balanced fertilizer in spring is best. Fall fertilizing, especially for late transplants, can be beneficial as long as the nitrogen content is very low.

BOB: While there are a few trees (Oaks and "fleshy rooted" trees) that should only be dug in the spring, most plants today are containerized or balled-and-burlapped (B+B) and can be planted anytime of the year. [More about shrub planting and tree planting]

The ideal time to plant trees is during the trees' dormant season, after leaf drop in the fall and before bud break in the spring.

Basically, you can plant bamboo any time you can work the soil. We have done most of our planting from November through March; however, we have planted in every month of the year with success.
