what causes knocking, pinging, detonation, and pre-ignition?

mkiv.com
detonation and pre-ignition are about the same thing, they just happen at different times in the compression cycle. pre-ignition is either caused by hot spots that pre-ignite the fuel before the spark plug goes off or the actual compression of the air/fuel igniting the mix. remember, when you compress a gas, you heat it up. that's why too much boost can cause extra high cylinder temperatures and subsequent pre-ignition. a lot of people call this detonation, but it isn't.

What is detonation, or pinging?

Magna Charger, Inc. - Frequently Asked Questions
Detonation (or pinging or engine knock) occurs simply when fuel pre-ignites before the piston reaches top dead center. This means that a powerful explosion is trying to expand a cylinder chamber that is shrinking in size, attempting to reverse the direction of the piston and the engine. When detonation occurs, the internal pneumatic forces can actually exceed 10x the normal forces acting upon a properly operating high performance engine. See similar questions...

What is pinging?

Qumana blog editor and blogging tools
quot; Many blog authoring tools automatically ping one or more servers each time the blogger creates a new post (or updates an old one). That is, the tool sends an XML-RPC signal to one or more 'ping servers', which can then generate a list of blogs that have new material." – Wikipedia Basically a ping is a signal sent from you to a search/aggregator server that says "hey, I have new stuff, come look at me". What is "knocking"?

Knocking is the sound of abnormal fuel combustion. It is caused by abnormal combustion of the air-fuel mixture in the cylinder. When a spark initiates combustion in a spark-ignition internal combustion engine, the flame front should fan out from the spark plug and travel across the combustion chamber rapidly and smoothly. What is detonation?

FAQs
The Trunkmonkey concept had been floating around the labs for quite a while before anyone actually decided to implement it. Consisting solely of a trained monkey and a steady source of ice cold high-quality import ale or lager, the Trunkmonkey lives in the trunk of any Subaru Impreza, Legacy, Forester or SVX platform vehicle and helps to automate weight transfer at the rear wheels during spirited driving maneuvers. See http://www.trunkmonkey.com/ for more information. See similar questions...

Q What causes pre-mature ejaculation?

Frequently Asked Questions
No one is quite sure how men develop problems with rapid ejaculation. However, many professionals believe that the ability to control one’s ejaculation is a skill that is learned during adolescence and early adulthood. Often, masturbation is considered a method in which this response is learned and mastered. Although the problem is more common among young men it can persist throughout the life span of an individual. See similar questions...

What is detonation, and how can it be controlled?

Detonation, or engine knock, occurs simply when fuel pre-ignites before the piston reaches scheduled spark ignition.

Why are you pinging my site?

IRCache: Frequently Asked Questions
Squid sends ICMP echo requests (aka ''pings'') to origin servers to measure network proximity. These network RTT (round-trip time) measurements are used by Squid in cache meshes to forward requests to the cache which is closest to the origin server. In short, we ping your site in order to know which cache will deliver your web pages most quickly and efficiently. Consider a cache located in the U.K. which has (at least) two neighbor caches to which it can forward requests. See similar questions...

What is electronic ignition? Distributorless ignition? Coil-on-plug?

Toyota FAQ (frequently asked questions)
Electronic ignition has been around a long time; it was invented by Chrysler and used on their cars starting in 1971 or 1972, but didn't hit some automakers until years later (Volkswagen in 1980 - when they already had multiple-point electronic fuel injection!). The system is a computer-controlled way to deliver power to spark plugs without cumbersome and maintenance-heavy breaker points, and with better timing and far higher levels of current. What is Knock/Detonation?

TurboByGarrett.com - FAQ's
Knock is a condition caused by abnormal combustion of the air/fuel mixture and can result in damage to an engine. The three factors that result in engine knock are: 1) knock resistance characteristics (knock limit) of the engine, 2) ambient air conditions, and 3) octane rating of the fuel being used. Since every engine is vastly different when it comes to knock resistance, there is no single answer to "how much. See similar questions...

My engine is knocking and ping'ing what can I do?

Isuzu Rodeo Trooper Amigo Rodeo Sport frequently asked qesti...
If you have a 2000-2004 Isuzu, make sure you only use Denso K16PR-P11 spark plugs. Check the link below to buy them for 6.80/plug (note the dealer charges about 17/plug) The 2000-2004 engines have the GM/delphi "ion sensing" ignition system where the spark plugs are used as a sensor (when they are not firing) to measure the electrical resistance of the gasses in the combustion chamber. Other plugs may cause the ECU to register a code (misfire code: P1340). See similar questions...

What is port knocking?

PORTKNOCKING - A system for stealthy authentication across c...
Port knocking is a method by which a remote computer (client) communicates with another computer (server) across closed ports. Information is encoded in the sequence of ports to which the client attempts to connect. The information flows in one direction, from the client to the server. The server does not send any response to the client as receipt of the information. Once encoded into a sequence of port numbers, any information can be sent across closed ports. Is knocking harmful ?

Occasional light knocking or pinging won't harm your engine, and doesn't indicate a need for higher octane. But don't ignore severe knocking. A heavy or persistent knock can lead to engine damage. See similar questions...
