By the end of age five, Montessori children are normally curious, self-confident learners who look forward to going to school. They are normally engaged, enthusiastic learners who honestly want to learn and who ask excellent questions. Montessori children by age six have spent three or four years in a school where they were treated with honesty and respect. While there were clear expectations and ground rules, within that framework, their opinions and questions were taken quite seriously.

Children that have been in a Montessori environment typically are very flexible and adjust quite easily to the public school situation. They are generally better students and spend their time in more productive ways because of their self-direction and positive attitude toward learning.

Our goal is to prepare children for life's experiences. We prepare them in the academic area so that most children enter first grade reading or on the brink of reading. They have a firm understanding of the concept of numbers and the decimal system. Their abilities to organize themselves and to solve problems are excellent. Their listening skills and their abilities to respect others and participate in the community are remarkable. Their confidence and communication skills are very high.

The Public Education Officer conducts fire safety presentations to all schools, public and private throughout the City of Sacramento, as requests are made. Presentation topics vary based on the age of the students. Topics include: Smoke Detectors; Arson Awareness; Preventable Injuries (bicycle/helmet safety, pedestrian safety, poison safety, seat belts, etc.), Calling 911; Stop, Drop, & Roll; Exit Drills In The Home (EDITH); and general fire safety.

One main difference is the difference in funding sources; public Montessori schools are supported in the same manner as other public schools; private Montessori schools are funded through tutition fees, fundraising and other private sources. Also public Montessori schools are subject to the mandates of federal and state education boards and private have a greater degree of freedom to implement the Montessori Philosophy as they see fit.

The goal of a Montessori education is to develop your child’s love of learning so that she/he keeps it throughout life. The child who transfers out of Montessori has a positive attitude towards school and self- discipline and responsibility. Most children transferring from Montessori to a public school adjust easily to their new classrooms.

Both private schools and public schools have their pros and cons. The main draw for public schools is that you are working for the government, or the local education board. People like that these positions have the financial backing of a government agency. For experienced teachers or those with higher levels of education, the pay packages can be competitive. On the other hand, there are some drawbacks when dealing with a public school job. The main ones are as follows: Location can be an issue.

Classroom design. You won’t see rows of desks, even in the upper elementary classrooms. Instead, there are study centers for different subject areas, clusters of student-sized tables, and open areas for work on the floor. Students will move freely around the room, choosing their own resources to pursue their work. They will work independently or in small groups for long uninterrupted periods of time Montessori materials.

Here in the Portland area, we have many elementary Montessori schools from which to choose. In Montessori elementary, the curriculum is comprehensive, covering the basics as well as more advanced skill levels. When children leave a Montessori program, we strive to help them leave with inner self-discipline; a positive attitude toward others, school and learning; self-esteem and the ability to concentrate on tasks. Often, but not always, they are ahead of their peers.

Students have a daily balance of individual project work, small-group cooperative work, small-group and large-group teacher lessons. Students can have social interactions at appropriate times within their normal academic work time. Traditional schools find it impossible to do anything other than large group presentations and there is strict segregation of academic work from social interaction.

Accountability: Charter schools are held accountable for how well they educate children in a safe and responsible environment, not for compliance with district and state regulations. They are judged on how well they meet the student achievement goals established by their charter, and how well they manage the fiscal and operational responsibilities entrusted to them. Charter schools must operate lawfully and responsibly, with the highest regard for equity and excellence.
