How Does A Furnace Work?

Frequently Asked Questions
When the term "furnace" is used within the context of heating a house, it's assumed to be a "forced-air" furnace, not a blast-furnace or other type. The forced-air furnaces all heat in the same method: by sucking in air, heating it, and blowing it out. Thus, furnaces heat your home by heating the air inside it. There are 4 major types of furnaces: gas (natural gas & liquid propane), oil, electric, and solid fuel (wood, wood pellets, corn, coal, etc...).

Will a larger furnace work better than a smaller furnace?

McCullough Heating and Air Conditioning - Austin's ventilati...

A smaller furnace will maintain more even temperatures, use less fuel, but will take longer to raise the temperature. Furnaces may need to be replaced if the heat exchanger cracks or if the homeowner wants to upgrade to achieve higher fuel efficiencies and save money on heating bills. An air conditioning system can normally be added to a furnace. See similar questions...

Why does my furnace have an air filter?

ASK AK MAN! FAQ
Air filters in your furnace/air conditioning system were originally designed to help keep the equipment clean. But as we have sealed our houses from air infiltration so as to conserve on energy used, we have enveloped ourselves inside an environment that is continuously off-gassing gases and shedding airborne particles. Thus there is a need for better filtration to protect us from the air that we breathe. Your air ducts can be a breeding ground for germs, bacteria, mold and mildew. See similar questions...

Will the Desert Spring furnace humidifier affect my furnace filter or cause rust in my duct work?

Desert Spring furnace humidifier frequently asked questions ...
No. moisture will NOT condense on your filter as long as your filter is not severely clogged and dramatically restricting air flow. The Desert Spring furnace humidifier is a passive evaporative device. Therefore the air passing through the unit will only carry as much moisture as it can hold. Similarly, the moisture will not condense in your duct work. Steam or atomizing humidifiers can cause these problems, but not a passive by-pass humidifier like the Desert Spring.
