How Does A Furnace Work?

Frequently Asked Questions
When the term "furnace" is used within the context of heating a house, it's assumed to be a "forced-air" furnace, not a blast-furnace or other type. The forced-air furnaces all heat in the same method: by sucking in air, heating it, and blowing it out. Thus, furnaces heat your home by heating the air inside it. There are 4 major types of furnaces: gas (natural gas & liquid propane), oil, electric, and solid fuel (wood, wood pellets, corn, coal, etc...).

Will a larger furnace work better than a smaller furnace?

McCullough Heating and Air Conditioning - Austin's ventilati...
quot;oversized" furnace will warm up the house quicker, but it will use more fuel and there will be greater temperature swings in your home. A smaller furnace will maintain more even temperatures, use less fuel, but will take longer to raise the temperature. McCullough Heating & Air Conditioning will calculate the proper furnace size to maintain 80 degrees inside when it is zero degrees outside. [ back to top ]

Will my new furnace work differently than my old one?

Frequently Asked Questions
Furnace technology has advanced significantly in recent years. Modern furnaces are designed to provide more even and efficient heating than past furnaces, which can impact both how your system operates and what you notice about your system. To better regulate temperatures and airflow, modern furnaces move more air over the heat exchanger than older furnaces. The air that comes out of your furnace registers may not seem as warm as the air from your old furnace, but overall airflow is improved.

BACK TO TOP What does the furnace do and how will I know there's a problem?

Dwyer Oil Since 1875: Frequently Asked Questions
A heating unit that heats air by transferring heat in a metal combustion area to the air and circulating it through the house in a network of ducts. The common fuels used to heat the air circulated through the furnace are fuel oil, natural gas, and electricity. Furnaces may need to be replaced if the heat exchanger cracks or if the homeowner wants to upgrade to achieve higher fuel efficiencies and save money on heating bills. An air conditioning system can normally be added to a furnace.

Why does my furnace have an air filter?

ASK AK MAN! FAQ
Air filters in your furnace/air conditioning system were originally designed to help keep the equipment clean. But as we have sealed our houses from air infiltration so as to conserve on energy used, we have enveloped ourselves inside an environment that is continuously off-gassing gases and shedding airborne particles. Thus there is a need for better filtration to protect us from the air that we breathe. Your air ducts can be a breeding ground for germs, bacteria, mold and mildew.

How much work can I expect with a Homesteader or Coalman furnace?

Answers to Hydronic Heating Questions | FAQ
The amount of work will depend on your heating load and the type of fuel you burn. With wood, you'll have to cut and haul the wood home but it doesn't have to be split and it only has to be cut into 4' lengths so it really isn't all that much work. The extra large door makes it easy to load the Homesteader and when you burn wood it has to be refueled every 12 to 36 hours. Flax straw bales last anywhere from 2 to 6 hours. When you burn bales you'll have to refuel more often.

Will the Desert Spring furnace humidifier affect my furnace filter or cause rust in my duct work?

Desert Spring furnace humidifier frequently asked questions ...
No. moisture will NOT condense on your filter as long as your filter is not severely clogged and dramatically restricting air flow. The Desert Spring furnace humidifier is a passive evaporative device. Therefore the air passing through the unit will only carry as much moisture as it can hold. Similarly, the moisture will not condense in your duct work. Steam or atomizing humidifiers can cause these problems, but not a passive by-pass humidifier like the Desert Spring.

Question: Does my furnace have a filter?

Furnace Filter Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Answer: That depends on what type of furnace you have. If you have a warm air furnace then you have an air filter. If you have a boiler and radiators then you probably don't have air filters.

Why does it smell like something is burning the first time I turn my furnace on in the fall?

Southeastern Mechanical, Inc. HVAC Commercial and Residentia...
During the summer, dust particles build up on the heat exchanger. When fall comes, you start your furnace, and the heat exchanger heats up to approximately 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Every time the furnace begins operating, the dust and dirt that built up all summer long begins to burn the dust off, which is the smell that is coming from your furnace.
