For example, a recently visited webpage can be quickly retrieved from the cache without having to download it from the internet again. Normally when you request a page your request goes directly to the site serving the page, even if this is overseas. Multiple requests for the same page increase network traffic and slow things down. If you configure your browser to use a proxy, your request goes to the proxy. With Squid-1.1, yes, you will lose your cache. This is because version 1.1 uses a simplistic algorithm to distribute files between cache directories. With Squid-2, you will not lose your existing cache. You can add and delete cache_dir's without affecting any of the others. Most people have a disk partition dedicated to the Squid cache. You don't want to use the entire partition size. You have to leave some extra room. Currently, Squid is not very tolerant of running out of disk space. Lets say you have a 9GB disk. Remember that disk manufacturers lie about the space available. A so-called 9GB disk usually results in about 8.5GB of raw, usable space. First, put a filesystem on it, and mount it. Then check the ''available space'' with your df program. Under Linux, reiserfs/tails provides the best space/time compromise. Reiserfs/notails, XFS and JFS should be slightly faster at the cost of more disk usage. Avoid ext2fs and ext3fs without hashed directories. Under BSD Unix, FFS (UFS) with small frags has good space usage, but access time of large directories remains pretty bad. Tachyon systems include an on-board HTTP proxy/cache system that can help you reduce network load and speed up your Internet connection. To enable this proxy on your PC's, set your HTTP proxy setting to Tachyon Gateway IP address, port 3128.
