This is an optical drive that will write both DVDs (Digital Versatile Disk, Data or Video) and CDs. The LightScribe DVD+/-RW / CDRW combination drive can read, write and, using the appropriate media, rewrite a variety DVD and CD media, including CD-R, CD-RW, DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+R DL, DVD-R DL, DVD+RW and DVD-RW. DVD+R, DVD-R and CD-R media are compatible with this drive but are a single write media. The DVD+RW, DVD-RW and CD-RW media can be written to multiple times.

Yes. Writing to CD and DVD discs is supported as long as you have some packet writing software installed on your computer. It usually comes bundled as a part of larger CD / DVD recording software packages and makes your CD or DVD drive act as a standard, transparently write-enabled drive. Packet writing software uses UDF-formatted CD and DVD discs, and allows GRBackPro to write to your CD / DVD drive by treating it like a hard disk or a floppy diskette, using the regular drive letter.

Usually. CD-Rewritable (Orange Book Part III) has a lower reflectivity difference, requiring new automatic-gain-control (AGC) circuitry. CD-RW discs can't be read by most existing CD-ROM drives and CD players. The new "MultiRead" standard addresses this, and some DVD manufacturers have suggested they will support it.

Only MULTIREAD CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives can read CD-RW media. Standard CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives cannot read the low-reflectance media used in CD-RW discs.
I've never heard of CD-RW drive that can read DVD discs...which doesn't necessarily mean there isn't one. I would do an internet search of the CD drive model you have to see what it can, in fact, read. I would assume, however, that no CD drive will read DVDs.

No, you do not need to install any software device drivers. Microsoft '95, '98, 2000, WinMe and NT are shipped with ATAPI device drivers installed that work correctly with most major brand CD-ROM-RW/DVD-ROM drive. After installing your CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive, and rebooting your computer, the system should recognize the CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive.

Just as CD-R was the nail in the coffin of the cassette, many industry insiders are predicting that DVD-RW will be the death of VHS. A DVD-RW is a disc which can be used over and over again and like a MiniDisc it shifts recordings to optimise the time left on the disc. You can therefore use it like you would a video cassette, or there is DVD-R discs which like a CD-R can only be used once.

Yes, DMD-RO501 only writes to DVD+R/RW media, however it will read compatible pre-recorded DVD-R/RW media or CD-R/RW media. (NOTE: DVD-R/RW and CD-R/RW require finalization before playable on other devices. So, please make sure any recordable media you attempt to play has been finalized on the original recorder)
