The larger the muffler pipes, the more sound will pass through with the power wave. Big pipes make more sound. We can absorb a certain amount of this sound by utilizing a longer muffler, but at some point this becomes both expensive and heavy. We often use XR-1? mufflers that are over 30" long for serious, Pro off-road trucks. Our parts manager suggested two things. First: Try to do it your self. There are many paints that will work on exhausts, it is the way you apply the paint. Have everything prepared outside or in a special room for painting. Including a place to hang the pipe while painting and drying. Take the hot pipes, one at a time, to the prepared area and paint. Allow to cool after painting. It is the expansion of the cold metal that pops the paint. Painting it while cool will not have the same effect. See similar questions...

No. I have found the gasket is just a source of problems later. They always seem to get a whole in it which causes an air leak and resulting engine adjustment problems. I just clean the surface of the exhaust flanges and as long as they are flat then it should not leak. None of mine have. Maybe. It will depend on the model and type of engine. There are mufflers that can reduce exhaust noise, but they probably won't make your generator quiet. Most of the noise produced by a generator is not exhaust noise but engine noise. Quiet generators, such as the Honda line do sometimes use large mufflers, but they are quieter mostly due to the design of the engine. The "Classic" 427SC had competition pipes under the doors. Being real race cars, the finish was not particularly important, and they were typically painted with a simple high temperature paint - usually white (see the top picture), sometimes black. No gloss, and the paint didn't stand up very well. On the other hand, a simple spray can would rejuvenate the pipes. Some people, wanting a more durable finish, have there pipes ceramic coated.
