Many medications have side effects. They are classified based on a number of factors, including whether they sedate (i.e., dull the senses), alter blood pressure, effect sexual function, are habit-forming, impact the digestive system, cause agitation or effect sleep. If your doctor recommends an antidepressant or anti-anxiety medicine, be sure to talk about its possible side effects.

Nearly all antidepressants and many anti-anxiety medications are non-addictive; however, benzodiazepine medications, which are in the same family as Valium, can be addictive. If you have anxiety and a history of alcohol or drug abuse, tell your physician about your addiction history.

Phenobarbital and potassium bromide both have the same potential side effects of excessive hunger, excessive thirst, excessive urination, sedation and ataxia (hind end weakness). Not all dogs will have all of these side effects and most of the side effects will subside or disappear as a dog becomes adjusted to the medication. Simvastatin (Zocor®) is a well-tolerated drug taken by millions of people worldwide. A few people (about 1 in 100) may develop elevated liver enzymes. For this reason, we will perform a blood test before you start simvastatin to make sure that your liver enzyme levels are normal and we will periodically check your liver enzymes as part of your participation in AIM-HIGH. Stomach upset may occur. If this persists or worsens, let your AIM-HIGH doctor know promptly.
