How can my applet open a socket connection to a machine other than the web server?

jGuru: Applets FAQ
Author: John Zukowski (http://www.jguru.com/guru/viewbio.jsp?EID=7) Untrusted applets can only communicate back to the server from which they came (the host that delivered the .class files). If you need to communicate with another server, you'll either have to sign your applet (and the user will have to trust you), or setup a proxy server on your web server to facility the communication between hosts.

My applet works on my machine, but fails when I put it on our web server. Why?

Java Programmer's FAQ
It could be one of several reasons, and unfortunately the messages that you get in this situation aren't much help. In general, you can assume that either your applet's class files are corrupted somehow, or the web server can't find one or more of them when the browser needs them. Make sure you transfer the class files in binary mode, rather than text or ASCII mode. An error from the browser saying "cannot start applet .. See similar questions...

How can an unsigned applet retrieve a file from the same web server that it was downloaded from?

Sun Microsystems
unsigned applet can open a connection only to the server from which it was downloaded, otherwise security exceptions will occur. The following code creates an applet with a text area that sends an HTTP request to the web server to establish a connection with the file resource. Java.io.BufferedReader reads the file one line at a time, and each line is displayed on the applet's text area. See similar questions...

I want to put in a socket for my machine, do you have any hints for this?

Washing Machine FAQ
The usual cheap bodge is to put a single socket on the wall under the worktop in the machine space. This has two major disadvantages. It obstructs the machine so it cannot be pushed fully against the wall, causing it to protrude beyond the worktop. If in a corner situation this can prevent adjacent drawers or doors from being opened. The machine cannot be electrically isolated, except by turning off the mains at the consumer unit.
