No, it can't. Visio file format is a completely proprietary and undocumented file format. So it is really difficult to write code to read it. The now-defunct Software Bazaar offered a bounty of several thousand dollars for reverse-engineering the Visio format. We really would like to be able to do so. easier alternative would be to make a Visio plug-in that will allow conversion. Other programs have already done this for their proprietary formats.

MetaSynth currently looks at the file 'type' rather than the file extension. AIFF files that originate on the Mac usually have the file type set correctly but files created on PCs usually don't. If you have a file type utility (such as File Typer or File Buddy), check to make sure that the file type is AIFF. If the file type appears in the Save dialog but is grayed out, you may need to change the image type. You need to install GhostScript to be able to read PostScript files with GIMP. GhostScript can be downloaded from http://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/.
