Most mothers are able to hear their baby's heartbeat at the beginning of their third trimester. Some mothers, however, are able to hear the heartbeat at the end of their second trimester.

The sound of the fetal heartbeat is distinctive, but can often be confused with other sounds at first. You may well have heard it already during your antenatal appointments with your midwife or doctor. It is a regular fast beating sound, not to be confused with the swishing sound of the placenta. A pulse that is more high-pitched than your baby's heartbeat, but at the same speed. This is the pulse through the umbilical cord; a very pregnant and reassuring noise !

Around the 20th week of your pregnancy, we will perform an anatomy screening ultrasound that will usually determine whether your baby is male or female. We'll keep it a secret, though, unless you tell us you want to know!

In almost all cases we can provide an indication of the sex of the baby. In some instances the position of the baby may hinder the results. We can't guarantee the baby will cooperate during the session but we will do our best to get the best images we can.

Our staff of ARDMS certified sonographers take great pride in being able to accurately identify the gender of your baby if you are at least 18 weeks. There are instances when fetal position may not allow proper visualization to adequately to make that determination. When this happens you will be invited back free of charge for limited gender check.

You should hear your baby's heartbeat at the beginning of your third trimester. There are, however, mothers who have told us they heard them late in their second trimester.

We are happy to check gender, and this service is included in all of our packages. We prefer to check gender after the baby reaches 19 weeks. Gender determination cannot be guaranteed, however, since we must rely on the cooperation of the baby and several other factors outside our control. But, if you are at least 19 weeks along and we can't tell the baby's gender, we will bring you back for free!

Depending on your circumstances we would either listen regularly with a sonicaid similar to the one used by the midwife at your antenatal appointments. Or in some circumstances we would put you on continuous monitoring that would give us a constant recording of the baby's heart beat.

The FDA regulates Fetal Doppler ultrasound. No harmful effects on the fetus have ever been reported. The Mayo Clinic says "In 30 years of regular use, no adverse effects have ever been demonstrated from ultrasound testing. Research has been done investigating both the noise produced in utero and the heat produced by ultrasound, and no problems have ever been detected from its use in exposed babies.

The first rule is don't panic. There are many factors you first need to take into consideration. First, how far into your pregnancy are you? By 14 weeks 100% of healthy pregnancies will be able to locate the fetal heartbeat with a baby heartbeat monitor. So if your pregnancy is somewhere between 8-14 weeks you'll just have to be patient. The baby may be in a position where hearing the heartbeat is difficult.

Dopplers can detect the heartbeat from as early as 10-12 weeks however for some it may be later than this. Please refer to Doppler Tips for best results.
