The current version of Cisco's VPN software available from this web site supports Apple's Airport Basestation and Basestation Extreme. VPN may be used via a number of home routers (such as Linksys, Netgear and Apple Airport Base Station [except the Graphite model]). While other devices may work with VPN, these are the only brands we know have been tested.

If you are currently using a wireless network based on 802.11b, yes! 802.11b uses wired equivalent privacy (WEP) to provide link based encryption of wireless transmissions. Recently, weaknesses have been discovered in the RC4 key scheduling algorithm which allows someone to easily recover the encryption key, and thus decrypt the wireless traffic. VPN is an excellent replacement for WEP. Using VPN with triple DES encryption is generally considered to be very strong encryption.

The AOL for Broadband Compatible routers can all be accessed through a web browser on your attached PC using the IP numbers supplied by the manufacturer(192.168.1.1 for Linksys, 192.168.0.1 for Netgear, 192.168.0.1 for Actiontec). For other router brands or models you should consult their instructions or contact the manufacturer.

Home networks can be setup in a number of different ways and usually use NAT to share a single IP address with the rest of the network. Since there are so many different ways to run a home network we can't provide support to users on this issue. There are a few ways you can connect to the VPN but they may not all be possible depending on your ISP and the type of NAT router you use. These same options also work with wireless networks.

We can provide you with a known workable solution for a small fee. We do restrict sharing of activity to be contained within a single residential home or office. The catch is – if you're on the road and using a computer at an FBO, for example, definitely be sure to log out when you're done. The basic packages include 5 licenses for 5 computers on a LAN. Those 5 users can be any combination of active readers or administrative nodes. The files can be shared from a single mapped network path on a server or or workstation. We do not install a separate copy of the data file on each node. So you can have two reader systems at different locations, a node in accounting to handle the payroll reporting and a node in the manager's office to handle scheduling and viewing active logins.
