The Windows "device manager" is not a conclusive check on the function of any device, especially serial ports. The best test is to power down the PC, unplug your regular mouse and plug a serial mouse into the port you intend to use with the wheel. When you re-boot, Windows should find a mouse. If not, you know the port is not working properly. You will probably need to consult your motherboard's manual to determine if the serial ports are indeed enabled in the motherboard's BIOS setup.

The serial port is a 9-pin D shaped connector, similar to the video connector except with less pins. Usually, there are two on a PC. One may possibly be in use by the mouse (mainly on older machines). They are also referred to as Com ports or Communications ports. They are identified in Windows as Com1, Com2 etc. Look in the device manager under "ports" and you will see if you have any set up - if not, you may have to enable them in you motherboard's bios via the CMOS setup utility.

There are new laptops without serial port, but a RS232-USB adaptor can be used to connect the IDE-Series to PCs. This adaptor creates a virtual COM port that can be selected on the program to work with the unit as usual. Theoretically any RS232-USB adaptor will work with this device, requirements are 9,600 baud transfer. We can supply a well-tested adaptor if you can not find a suitable one.
