Why should I use Fiberglass Insulation instead of Cellulose?

Frequently Asked Questions - Top-Quality Insulation & Fi...
Properly installed fiberglass does not settle more than 1% and maintains it’s thermal performance. Most cellulose products settle over time at a rate of about 20% and may loose 20% of its R-Value. The R-Value of Fiberglass does not deteriorate over time. Cellulose can sometimes loose R-Value over time. Insulation can loose R-Value when wet. Fiberglass is not absorbent. (If it becomes saturated due to flooding, etc., it should be replaced.

Is Cellulose Insulation fire-safe?

American Energy Savers Cellulose Frequently Asked Questions
Cellulose insulation is arguably the safest organic building material since it is always treated with persistent fire retardants. The United States Consumer Products Safety Commission does not believe cellulose insulation is a hazardous product. Fire statistics do not support the claim that cellulose insulation is a hazardous product.

Why is Cellulose Insulation Better Insulation?

Shore Insulation FAQ - frequently asked questions
There are several key reasons cellulose insulation is a superior product for buildings: higher R-per-inch values than most comparable mineral fiber materials, reduces air-leakage, not as subject to convective heat loss, lower cost relative to competing products of similar thermal efficiency, fire safe, made from more than 75% recycled material, environmentally friendly, approved by all major code bodies, and well tested and field proven.

I am thinking of adding insulation to my home. What can I use besides fiberglass?

Frequently asked questions about glass fibers
We can't recommend specific products, but we encourage you to use our competing insulation product links to see the many possibilities out there.

Can reflective insulation be used with fiberglass?

radiant barrier-reflective insulation-btubusters.com
Yes, if you like. Our BTUFOIL tm Reflective Insulation and BTUBUSTERS tm PREMIUM RADIANT BARRIER can be used in conjunction with fiberglass insulation creates a highly energy efficient insulation combination. Together, both types of insulation can substantially help reduce energy costs.

Can I use fiberglass seam tape and fabric instead of polyester?

FAQ
It is possible, but we don't recommend it. Polyester is more flexible, stronger, and has a proven history of success with our products. Also, be aware that some fiberglass tape and fabric is asphalt impregnated and will not work well with water-borne products.

Can I use epoxy and fiberglass instead of canvas or polyester?

Black Dog Kayaks - Skin on Frame Kayak Kits
You can use fiberglass instead of the provided polyester skin, but we don't recommend it. While fiberglass requires less maintenance, it is actually more fragile than the skin that comes with the kit. The polyester skin will flex when it comes in contact with another object, whereas the fiberglass may crack and require extensive repair at home. If the polyester skin does get a hole in it, it is easy to do a field fix and continue on your way.

What is the best insulation to use?

Solar Cooking Frequently-Asked Questions
If you wish, you can insulate the walls of a box cooker with various substances. Fiberglass or Styrofoam is usually not recommended since they give off ill-smelling gases as they heat up. Natural substances such as cotton, wool, feathers, or even crumpled newspapers work well. Many people, however, leave the walls empty of any stuffing, preferring instead to place a piece of foiled cardboard as a baffle inside the wall airspace. This makes a lighter cooker and seems to be adequate.

How effective is fiberglass, foam and cellulose at insulating radiant heat?

radiant barrier-reflective insulation-btubusters.com
Not very effective. Fiberglass, foam and cellulose slows down various forms of heat but have very low reflective ratings and very high emissive ratings. This makes them particularly poor insulators against radiant heat.

Question: How do you ship your fiberglass pipe insulation ?

einsulation - Fiberglass Pipe FAQ - einsulation suppliers of...
Answer: We ship in cardboard cartons and in 40 ft "hi cube" containers. The outside dimensions of a "hi cube" container are 40'L x 8'W x 8'6"H. The inside dimensions are 39'6"L x 7'8"W x 7'10"H. The contents of a "hi cube" container are approximately two-thirds of a 53 ft truckload.

Can I use Radiant Barrier instead of regular insulation?

Radiant Barrier FAQ, Energy Efficient Solutions
There are some venders which suggest to use radiant barrier instead of regular insulation, but we always recommend using it in conjunction with regular insulation. The reason is that they work to perform different functions. Regular insulation primarily slows down conductive heat transfer, but does not prevent radiant heat from penetrating. Radiant Barrier blocks radiant heat, but not conductive heat transfer.

Can Cellulose Insulation help reduce building air-leakage?

American Energy Savers Cellulose Frequently Asked Questions
Cellulose insulation has been shown to reduce air-leakage through wall and ceilings of buildings. Colorado University found cellulose at least 36 percent better than fiber glass in tightening buildings, which resulted in a 26%+ overall improvement in energy efficiency. Considerable research at the US DOE Oak Ridge National Laboratory shows cellulose insulation is not as subject to convective heat loss.

Your plans show wood or fiberglass shingles for the roof. Can we use metal?

Barn Plans [Frequently Asked Questions]
Good idea in snow country, or if you're in an area where water is scarce. Think about a "rain catchment" system with a metal roof, gutters, and a holding tank.

What is Cellulose?

Insulation FAQs - McHale Insulation Co.
Thermolok InCide Cellulose Insulation is made from recycled newspaper* and 100% borate fire retardant chemical.

Why are Theralac capsules made of cellulose (Vegicaps) instead of gelatin?

Theralac - Questions About Lactoferrin Acidophilus and Probi...
Gelatin is derived from beef byproducts and is not acceptable to vegetarians. Some non-vegetarians object to beef byproducts for other reasons. Vegicaps are made from materials of plant origin. Theralac does not contain any: yeast, eggs, corn, soy, gluten, wheat, salt, lactose or beef products.

Should I exercise in an unfinished room with exposed fiberglass insulation?

Frequently asked questions about glass fibers
We advise against that. When you exercise you are pumping more air through your lungs. You are also likely to be breathing through your mouth, bypassing the important particle-trapping abilities of the nose. If the air in your exercise area is contaminated with glass fibers, then your exercise may be doing more harm than good. Finish off any unfinished areas if you are planning to work out there regularly. Then do a proper clean up.

Should I do my laundry in an unfinished room with exposed fiberglass insulation?

Frequently asked questions about glass fibers
Again, we advise against that. This is a sure-fire way to get fiberglass into all of your clothes. Contamination can occur even if the room seems clean. Again, finish off any areas which you plan to use for laundry, then do a proper clean up.

I am demolishing a building. Should I be concerned about fiberglass insulation?

Frequently asked questions about glass fibers
Absolutely! Demolition of buildings containing fiberglass can result in massive exposure to workers and to the environment. Furthermore, old insulation is loaded with mold, filth and vermin, which are health hazards even without the fiberglass. Exposures to people during demolition can be greatly reduced by using the proper safety gear, including a correctly fitted full-face respirator and full-body protective clothing, possibly made out of Tyvek.
