Assuming local Building Official approval for this type of installation is obtained, you should use the length of nail recommended for that specific material. Add the thickness of the existing insulation and this gives you the nail length required for the fastener to penetrate ¾" or more into the sheathing. Although cedar is a natural durable species, leaving it untreated is not recommended because a finish or protective coating will greatly increase it's service life. Cedar is free of pitch and with its high degree of dimensional stability, it is the best of the softwoods for accepting paints, stains, oils and other coatings. Lakeside Lumber recommends an initial coat of high quality oil based primer on all four sides of the siding, followed by two coats of high quality 100% acrylic latex paint.

Our sheds normally come with a 5/8th inch pine siding, but if you plan on putting on vinyl or some other type of siding, we can put on OSB siding. OSB (chip board) is a little cheaper and better for vinyl siding. Just let us know when ordering that you plan on putting up your own siding.

Do not use common nails or screws. Use of these will lead to eventual bleeding of rust over time, causing an unsightly stain in the cedar siding. Use only hot dipped galvanized, aluminum, or stainless steel nails or screws when fastening Western Red Cedar. Be careful not to over-nail, as this can lead to splits in the cedar.

The life span of a cedar shingle roof depends on many factors: product used, thickness, slope, maintenance, application and climatic conditions are the most important. Cedar roofs can last 100 years. Before applying a coating of any nature, make sure the cedar is completely dry. When applying a solid paint or finish, apply a primer coat for all surfaces. This will help to protect the wood from moisture and possible mildew build up. A primer coat with tannin blocking qualities will help to stop what is called extractive bleeding which takes place when tannins in the wood are dissolved by moisture, causing them to seep up to the surface of the wood.

Yes, DuPont™ Tyvek® DrainWrap™ can be used under cedar siding. It is recommended that the cedar siding be installed per manufacturer’s guidelines and recommendations by wood siding associations, such as the Western Red Cedar Lumber Association, including priming all surfaces including the back and ends before installing. Additionally, the use of furring strips will help promote drainage of any incidental water that may penetrate the cedar cladding.

If you’re using a semi-transparent stain, find a stain and an acrylic latex caulk that match, re-stain then caulk. Semi-transparent stain doesn’t do a good job over caulk. If you’re using a solid color stain, caulk with the same acrylic latex caulk, then stain. A clear caulk will also work.
