A high-performance graphics card will certainly help. The underlying system spends a lot of time blitting 32-bit RGB bitmaps to the screen. But no 3D capabilities of the card will be used.

If you have more than one 3d accelerator card and would like to change which card the game uses, edit the config.dat file in your install directory (using a text editing program such as notepad).
