The DOS-software can?t do the ASME flange calculation with full-faced gasket. WIN_SHELL is able to do so. The calculation is done according to the book "Design of Process Equipment" page 106 ff. This is the method recommended by Taylor Forge and Pipe Works.

No. I have found the gasket is just a source of problems later. They always seem to get a whole in it which causes an air leak and resulting engine adjustment problems. I just clean the surface of the exhaust flanges and as long as they are flat then it should not leak. None of mine have. Another alternative that I have not tried is to use epoxy as a gasket material. See similar questions...

insert flange is a two-piece flange, similar in concept to a lap-joint and stub-end flange, but of superior quality. It consists of an insert (usually made out of 316/316L or 304/304L), and a flange, or bolting ring (usually made out of A-105 or 515/516 Grade 70 carbon steel). A tile flange is usually for a tub or shower receptor only. It is the raised area around the edge of the tub/receptor that goes right up against the studs. Sometimes you nail/screw it to the studs. Sometimes you don't (i.e. cast iron tubs) but they all serve the function of helping prevent water from getting up over the edge of the tub and down into the walls or onto the sub-floor. Gaskets eventually wear out. Some people get years out of them. Other people get months. I suppose it has to do with how much heat you allow to get to the gasket.
