Doctors' offices often need your Social Security number to process your health insurance claim. For example, Medicare and many commercial insurers use the customer's Social Security number as a primary identifier. Even as insurers move to change this practice, the customer's Social Security number may still be needed when coordinating benefits between a patient's primary and supplemental insurances, each of which may use a separate identifying number.

A Social Security Number is for employment purposes only. You will need to have a written job offer from an Ohlone department and a letter from the Office of International Programs and Services. You take these letters with your passport and Ohlone I-20 to apply for a Social Security Number.

Not any more. The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 prohibits states from displaying your SSN on drivers' licenses or motor vehicle registrations. The law went into effect on December 17, 2005, and applies to all licenses, registrations, and state identification cards issued after that date. If your current license still uses your SSN as the ID number, you can request that this be changed.

Clayton State University complies with all legal requirements for use of SSNs. Your SSN is handled in a confidential manner and when the conversion is complete, the SSN will not be published or requested as the primary identifier to access records in University systems. It will only be used for mandated business functions such as tax reporting to federal and state government agencies.
