Most individuals are in a higher tax bracket in their working years than during retirement. Deferring income until retirement may result in paying taxes on that income at a lower rate. Deferral can also work in the short term if you expect to be in a lower bracket in the following year or if you can take advantage of lower long-term capital gains rates by holding an asset a little longer.

No. The University does not allow admitted applicants to defer admission. If you are unable to attend during the quarter for which you have been admitted, we will keep your application materials (LOR, SOP, transcripts, etc.) but you must reapply for the following year. It depends. Written requests are evaluated by the Dean of Admissions. A good reason would be to complete a graduate degree. Most others are less convincing.

In theory yes. You should contact the Admissions Office by letter or email. We will then liaise with the department on your behalf. Whilst this is not usually a problem, offers are made based upon numbers of students, so it may not always be possible. You will be notified by letter once we have received a decision from the department.

For full marathoners (only) who cannot run and do not wish to change events or transfer to a friend, it may be possible to defer your full marathon entry to the following year. This will be permitted on a case-by-case basis; please contact us with your details and reason you cannot run. Note: this does not apply to half marathon or 5k entries.

The Schulich School of Music does not permit deferring an acceptance from one year to the next year. Applicants have to re-apply and, in Performance, re-audition.

No, there is no provision to defer a postgraduate programme place. You must re-apply again (e.g., the following year), in competition with applicants in that round (i.e., there is no guarantee you will be offered a place in that particular cycle). However, if you choose to re-apply, then please mention in your "re-application" that you were accepted for a place previously.

Only full-time, permanent positions count towards the two-year minimum work requirement. Applicants' initiative in landing internships and the experiences gained in these assignments are certainly considered when we evaluate your overall package. While we are aware that many international applicants work full time while attending university, we prefer that they also present a minimum of two years of work experience after completing the first degree.

If Admission Services grants a deferral of your admission to the program of study that you have accepted (e.g. Commerce), then your scholarship will also be deferred. Please note this is for merit-based scholarships only. Any award that has financial need criteria cannot be deferred.

No. It is the policy of The San Diego Foundation not to defer scholarships. There are no exceptions to the rule. While a few of our scholarships are large enough to pay the entire cost of college, the majority are not. The scholarships awarded by The San Diego Foundation are intended to provide partial, not full, support. In addition to applying for scholarships through The Foundation, you may want to look at other financial aid resources such as state and federal grants, loans and work-study.

Due to the highly competitive nature of our program, we do not allow enrollment deferments—new students must enter in the following September. Once in our program, students are allowed to go on-leave (i.e., maintain affiliation with our program and UW without having to be registered) for various reasons. It is up to the approval of his/her advisor to arrange on-leave through this Graduate Program Office.
