LGCL identifies shortcuts for a small number of terms. These terms are recommended by LAWs for adoption as common shortcuts across local authority Web sites. Shortcuts are added to the Web site address of a local authority to provide a URL for a Web page with corresponding subject matter. For example: www.mycouncil.gov.uk/recycling should go to a page with content on rubbish, waste and recycling.

The alias command creates command aliases. Type alias shortstring="longcommandstring", substituting your own commands for shortstring and longcommandstring. The quotes around longcommandstring are necessary it the string contains spaces. You can put the alias commands into your login profile (see the next question).

Creating too many shortcuts, especially on the desktop, defeats their purpose, which is to make them easy to find. Also, desktop shortcuts are accessible only when they are visible ? in other words not hidden behind windows. Shortcuts to your favorite emoticons can be easily created to send your buddies. Simply place the cursor on any emoticon and click on the "EDIT" text which appears on the top of each icon.
