How does Shotokan karate differ from other martial arts?

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for the University of Conn...
All martial arts have their specialties and unique character. Shotokan is traditional Japanese karate that specializes in punching, striking, kicking and blocking techniques. However, there is much overlap in technique among martial arts styles. For example, we also do sweeping, throwing and joint-locking techniques. In Shotokan, you won't see much of the flashy spinning and jumping about that is popular in martial arts movies - just techniques that are powerful and effective. See similar questions...

Question: When did you begin the study of martial arts?

Tsuki Kage dojo - FAQ
Ueshiba Morihei: At about the age of 14 or 15. First I learned Tenshin shin'yo ryu jujutsu from Tokusaburo Tozawa sensei, then Kito ryu, Yagyu ryu, Aioi ryu and Shinkage ryu, all of them jujutsu forms. However, I thought there might be a true budo form elsewhere. I tried Hozoin ryu sojutsu and kendo. But all of these arts are concerned with one-to-one combat forms and they could not satisfy me.
