You can take a hard copy of a document and move it to your computer using your eFax account. Simply fax the document to your eFax number from an external fax machine. You will receive the document as a soft copy to your email address. You can save the document to your computer or make changes and print it out.

You can use the library's photocopy machines to scan pages that will be saved as PDF files and emailed to you. These scans are moderate-quality black and white only - suitable for text, but not for images. You may read the scanning instructions or ask at the Reference Desk for assistance. Digitisation can be a valuable way of either reducing the use of or extracting hidden information from your original material. Multi-spectral imaging and more traditional high-end scanning is now becoming more accessible to the conservator. There are a number of different ways of achieving your results dependant upon your final usage. The British Library has experts in the digitisation field covering all activities from creation through to long-term preservation.

This will vary to a large extent according to the information on each page but typically 20-30 archive boxes of A4 documents can fit on one CD-ROM. You can see now the potential for cutting back those office floor space costs!

Documents should be scanned so that the text of the documents appears on the screen right side up. The reason this is important is because many companies use handwriting recognition software to process documents. However, if the documents are scanned upside down, fuel desk personnel will have the ability to rotate an image after the document has been scanned. The document can be rotated during the transaction review step.

All IP addresses in your account are included in the scan target every time you launch a scan. To view the IPs in your account, go to IP Assets->View IPs. You may add IPs up to the limit defined for your account. The maximum number of IPs allowed in your account can be viewed by selecting "Account Info" on the left menu.

It is one form to send fax by email using email-to-fax service. Since the fax is sent to the recipient's country via email and then re-transmitted to the recipient's fax machine, the communication cost is much lower than the normal IDD cost. eFax Messenger is a free application that you can use to view your faxes. If you sign up for eFax Plus or eFax Pro you can also send faxes through eFax Messenger. You are not required to download eFax Messenger to view your faxes but if you would like to utilize the application, please visit the download page.
