All owners of singe-family residences, two- or multi-family dwellings are required to install a minimum of one smoke detector adjacent to the sleeping area in each dwelling unit and at least one additional smoke detector on each additional story of the dwelling, including the basement. Depending on the type of business, rule of thumb is if there is any sleeping, daycare, hotel, motel, etc, smoke detectors are required. Several codes apply, so contact the fire prevention bureau. The New York City Housing Maintenance Code requires landlords to provide and install smoke detecting devices in each apartment unit. Renters are responsible for maintenance and repair of the smoke detector(s) (i.e.; installing batteries, etc..). It is important to install a smoke detector on every floor of your residence. It is also a good idea to place a detector in every bedroom. When people are warned early enough about a fire, they can escape before it spreads.

The difference between smoke and heat detectors is obvious by the name. Smoke detectors are more sensitive to sensing smoke; heat detectors are more sensitive to changes in temperature. They both detect fire typical parameters, however they are not interchangeable. A smoke detector warns of fire when it senses the products of combustion (soot) in the atmosphere.

Working smoke detectors can alert you to a fire in your home in time for you to escape, even if you are sleeping. Install smoke detectors on every level of your home, including the basement, and outside each sleeping area. If you sleep with the door closed, install one inside your sleeping area as well. Test detectors every month, following the manufacturer's directions, and replace batteries once a year, or whenever a detector "chirps" to signal low battery power.

Where you place smoke detectors depends on the size and layout of your home, and where people sleep in your home. Since the primary job of a smoke detector is to awaken sleeping persons and warn them of urgent danger, put a detector in each sleeping room and place additional detector(s) in the hallway or area by the bedrooms within five feet of the door to these rooms. In a house where the bedrooms are upstairs, one additional detector should be near the top of the stairs to the bedroom area.
