Place your pond in a place that will maximize your enjoyment. Consider putting it in a place where you can easily view it from rooms where you spend a lot of your time, such as kitchen or family room. Ponds and waterfalls make wonderful additions to the outdoor areas where you relax and entertain such as decks and patios. Some sunlight is good - too much can cause problems. About 1/2 day of sun is usually sufficient to ensure healthy plant growth.

All it means if you have green water is that there are too many nutrients in the water. This can be caused by too many fish, overfeeding the fish, the wrong kind of fertilizer, or lots of rotting vegetation. To combat algae, simply add more plants, decrease the number of fish, feed the fish less or add a filtration system. Don't replace all the water with fresh water... this just gives the algae a fresh supply of nutrients. Adding plants takes away the nutrients the algae needs to survive.

It depends on where you are and if you need to be able to keep fish over the winter in it. At minimum, without considering fish, your pond should be 2 feet deep. A pond that is shallower will heat up excessively, encouraging algae growth. We generally recommend you plan to keep your fish in the pond over the winter, they survive better outside than inside once they are about two years old.

New and reclaimed ponds are eligible for stocking of fish from our ODWC hatcheries. A fish application form can be obtained from any ODWC hatchery office or biologist or the fish division office in OKC. If the weeds are growing on the ground at the shore or are above the waterline, use PondMaster® Surface & Shoreline Herbicide. For submerged weeds, use PondMaster Aquatic Herbicide. PondMaster Blue is a colorant that will also help control aquatic weeds by restricting the wavelength of sunlight penetrating the water.

This is one of those questions that you as a parent or guardian must answer. Our river, creek, and/or pond are sometimes fast moving, sometimes shallow, sometimes deep, have rocks, may have slippery moss, does your child or pet know how swim, do they wear life vests, will you monitor them at all times, would you feel comfortable leaving them in a swimming pool without supervision? Ponds require quarterly maintenance to address such issues as leaf debris, bacteria build-up and filter care. A professionally designed and installed pond can be constructed to include an appropriate depth for the selected plants, the ideal placement within the landscape and the right conditions to accommodate fish (such as the depth of the pond and protection from predators). The pond should be installed in a location where it can be enjoyed and viewed from several locations in the yard. You want your pond easily accessible and visually pleasing, ideally adjacent to a frequently used sitting area.

The number of plants is totally up to you. However, it is recommended to have enough plants to cover 50-60% of the water surface to deter algae growth.

Measure the average length of your pond and multiply it by the average width and by the average depth and you will arrive with your total cubic feet of water. As there are 7.5 gallons per cubic foot, you can multiply your total cubic feet by 7.5 to get your total gallons in your pond. For example, a 4 foot by 6 foot pond 18" deep will be: 4 x 6 x 1.5 = 36 cubic feet. Then 36 x 7.5 = 270 gallons.

Just lay it upside down on a flat surface in the warm sun for a few hours. The problem should be corrected.

If circumstances permit (power availability, etc.), by all means do so. Hopefully, you can avoid losing fish to low dissolved oxygen problems.

There are many variables that affect how often your pond should be cleaned, such as the amount of fish and plants that live in the pond and how much debris gets into the pond. The weather can also be a factor. Algae thrives in warm weather which can become a problem during the summer. Some of our clients schedule our maintenance service once per month in the cooler months, and every other week in the warmer months. The frequency is entirely up to you, depending on how you like your pond to look.

Sprinkle the Bacteria in front of the skimmer. This will make sure that the bacteria gets into the BIOFALLS® and every where else in the pond.

Unfortunately due to insurance reasons we do not allow swimming in the pond. You can enjoy fishing, rent a paddleboat or bring your own kayak, canoe or skiff (please no gas powered engines).

Crappie are not usually recommended in bass ponds under 100 surface acres. A prolific spawner, crappie in small bodies of water will usually compete directly with bass for food and produce not only slow-growing crappie but slow-growing bass as well. They are also known to reduce small bass survival by preying directly on young bass. You may know of a pond with both good size bass and crappie, but these are rare.

Liner ponds are less expensive to install, but are much more delicate. They are harder to clean and maintain than concrete ponds, which is one reason why we prefer concrete ponds. Liner ponds are much more likely to be punctured or torn during normal maintenance. One advantage to a liner pond is that they won't crack when it freezes, however that is not much of an issue San Diego. Liner ponds are less likely to be penetrated by roots, but liners need to be protected from the sun.
