Which grass seed is best for a shady spot?

Your Backyard Garden & Backyard Gardening: Lawns FAQs ...
None, really. That’s not exactly true, but then they haven’t developed an Astroturf seed yet. There is no true shade grass; all grasses like some sun. However, the best of the bunch that can get along with less sun than the rest is Poa trivialis. Kentucky 31 tall fescue, Zoysia, Japonica, Zoysia matrella, Astoria bent, Highland and Penncross bents, as well as creeping red, Illahee, and Chew-lugs fescue, all will tolerate light shade.

Question: What roses, if any, would be suited to growing in a shady spot in a container?

Frequently Asked Questions - Spring Valley Roses - Hardy Ros...
Answer: This is a tough question -- most roses are real sun lovers and need at least 5 hours of sun each day to perform well. Roses that get less sun than they need have fewer blossoms and leggy growth as they try to reach for the sun. And sometimes shady spots also are more moist, which can lead to leaf spot and mildew problems. Generally, the thing to do is find a rose that blooms prolifically in full sun and has good disease resistance. See similar questions...

Q: Why won't grass stay in shady areas of my lawn, even though I use shady grasses?

Agro Lawn FAQ page
Grasses are plants that require a certain amount of light to survive. Plants use light to process and create food. Some grasses do better than others in shady areas because of the way they grow. Deep shade grasses grow flatter and can take in more light than a plant that grows straight up and down. Even shady grasses require sunlight for at least 1/3 of the day. If this requirement is not met the plant will begin to suffer and die back. See similar questions...

What can you do to keep the birds off new grass seed until it sprouts?

Your Backyard Garden & Backyard Gardening: Lawns FAQs ...
Adopt six or seven cats. Seriously, though, cover the seed with one quarter inch of topsoil, pat down or roll gently. The faster it sprouts, the more you keep and the less the birds eat. You can also slit an old tennis ball and force it over the end of a six- to seven-foot piece of old garden hose. Draw two mean eyes and a nasty mouth, and place yellow strips of tape like Xs down the hose. Let this lie on the seeded area until the seed sprouts. Why? The birds think it’s a snake. What is black spot and what is the best way to treat it?

Ask a Master Gardener
Black spots are formations on the leaves of the plants. The tissue next to the spot turns yellow and the leaves eventually fall off. This disease occurs mostly in humid weather and is spread by spores that form on spots which are then carried from plant-to-plant by rain or sprinkling. One way to prevent black spot is to water roses early in the day, so that the leaves will be dry by nightfall. Also, remove diseased leaves and prune diseased wood before spring growth. For soils which are heavier in texture such as clay loams, or soils with extreams of acidity or alkalinity, then seeding rates should be increased to between 35-50g per metre square.
