English movies do not contain subtitles unless it is stated clearly. However, most of our Chinese movies contain English subtitles.

A good resource for finding subtitles for Asian movie DVDs which come without subtitles is Kloofy's. You'll need a plug in like Direct VobSub to be able to use them though - much more info is available at Kloofy's. Yes, and probably not. DVDs are encoded into regions; relevant here are regions 1 (US and Canada), 2 (Europe) and 3 (South-East Asia). A significant number of films here are only available in region 3 versions.

All movies on this site are only available in their original languages. Fortunately, all have English subtitles available on the disc. It's our understanding that European versions of some of these films are dubbed into their respective languages - there's a French language version of Battle Royale, for example. Subtitles can only be placed on top of the video. Placing the subtitles below the original video is possible by enlarging the video frame. This is done by adding black bars to the top and bottom of the video. These black bars will be visible when the video is not in fullscreen. They are different from black bars that are only visible during fullscreen playback. Those are not part of the video frame and thus can not be used to put the subtitles onto.

Ringu 1 and Ringu 2 are PAL and region 0 (which is codefree). Codefree means that it can be played on any DVD-player. These films are PAL though and therefore require a PAL-compatible DVD-player. Ringu 0: Birthday is region 2 and therefore require a DVD-player that can play region 2 and also PAL. If you live in Europe your DVD-player will do just fine. There are several programs you can use to stream movies in the Archive. Because we allow users to upload video files in any format, the same player will not always work for every single file, so it's a good idea to have a couple of programs available that you can try. Also, some files simply can't be streamed. Usually, this happens when the program that created the video file uses a codec that our software doesn't understand.

You need to SET UP the disc by selecting SET UP from the Picture This DVD main menu. There you can choose which subtitles or closed-captions you would like to appear. In most cases, you can also choose none. From this menu you can also select between regular 2-channel stereo (2.0) or 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound (5.1).
