A detective is a plain-clothes police officer responsible for the follow-up investigation of crimes and incidents. A uniformed patrol officer responds to and handles the initial investigation of calls for police service. The detective continues the investigation started by the patrol officer but may also initiate specialized investigations directly assigned to the detective unit. In the vast majority of city and county law enforcement agencies, a person who wants to become a detective must first serve as a uniformed patrol officer, normally for three to five years.
