This MS Word 'feature' has been with us throughout several versions and seems to be related to the speed of your video card. When you try to select text with the mouse (click and drag) it scrolls too fast and it's difficult to select text accurately. As far as I am aware, Microsoft have still not produced a fix for this but there are a number of workarounds: Use the keyboard to select text instead of the mouse.
