What is the difference between keyboard wedge and RS-232 interfaces?

CHAMP - SUPPORT/DRIVERS - Barcode FAQs
For a keyboard wedge interface, the scanner or reader (decoder built in) connects to the keyboard port of computer, the keybard will connect to the split cable of scanner and remains fully functional. The data scanned from a bar code symbol is treated as it is typed in from the keyboard. For RS-232 interface, the scanner or reader connects to a serial port and transmits serial data to the host machine. The host must be set up to receive serial data.

What is a keyboard wedge?

The RetailEdge Store Policies
A keyboard wedge is a device that plugs into your system between the keyboard and the computer. The device essentially decodes the data (barcode or magnetic stripes) and then sends the data to the screen as if you were typing it. If you order a keyboard wedge device we assume that the connections are going to be PS2 unless you specify. Most new computers have the PS2 connections (6 pin). USB scanners are typically keyboard wedge devices (emulated with a driver) unless you specify otherwise. See similar questions...

What is the difference between provider and admin interfaces ?

X-Cart: Frequently asked questions
There are three different interfaces: the first is the customer interface (the shop), the second is the provider interface and the third is the admin interface. Admin interface is created for shop owners. The admin interface can be used to configure and control the store. Unlike the admin interface, provider interface can be accessed by several _different_ product providers. Each of them can add/modify/delete their own products and keep track of their own orders. What's a Bar Code Keyboard Wedge?

Ticketing Reservation System, Tour Reservation Software, Boa...
A BarCode Keyboard Wedge Decoder is a microcomputer which decodes the signals generated by a BarCode Scanner (while reading a label), and converts the analized bar and space patterns into the original data. The BarCode Decoder then converts the recovered data into the same codes that the Keyboard generates (aka: keyboard codes), in order to "fool" the PC into believing that the scanned data was typed on the keyboard. What are Keyboard Wedge and Serial Eavesdrop?

FAQ - PSC / Percon - Decoders
While PowerWedge 20, decoded Snapshot, or Series 20/Plus decoders may be connected either serially or as a keyboard wedge, the PowerWedge 10 and Mini PowerWedge cannot. A dedicated PowerWedge 10 (with a separate power supply) is required for serial use and the Mini PowerWedge can be used only as a keyboard wedge. A dedicated keyboard wedge or serial model cannot be used in a configuration other than the one for which it is designed. See similar questions...

How does the keyboard wedge work?

FAQ - Posiflex Products
The keyboard wedge interface is a chain, like daisy-chaining (e.g. SCSI), or serial pass-thru. It does not require a terminator or terminating device at the end of the chain (the farthest device from the keyboard port). The last device on the chain can be a keyboard wedge device or a standard AT keyboard. This type of keyboard can only exist as the last device on the chain. See similar questions...

What's a Bar Code Software Keyboard Wedge?

Ticketing Reservation System, Tour Reservation Software, Boa...
A BarCode Software Wedge is a software program that is installed in a PC, to perform the functions typically performed by a hardware BarCode Keyboard Wedge or RS-232 Decoder (basically, decoding signals generated by BarCode Scanners, and converting them to alpha-numeric codes). What is RS-232?

Frequently Asked Questions
Probably the most widely used communication standard is RS-232. This implementation has been defined and revised several times and is often referred to as RS-232 or EIA-232. The most common implementation of RS-232 is on a standard 25 pin D sub connector, although the IBM PC computer defined the RS-232 port on a 9 pin D sub connector. Both implementations are in wide spread use. RS-232 is capable of operating at data rates up to 20 Kbps / 50 ft. See similar questions...

What's the difference between hosts, gateways and interfaces?

Check Point Technical Support
In defining network objects, it is important to keep in mind the distinction between hosts, gateways, and interfaces. A gateway will have more than one interface, but the gateway itself is a single object and should be defined as such. Each of the interfaces is defined as a separate item in the Network Interfaces section of the Workstation Properties window. A host's name is the string returned by the hostname command. What's the difference between the CGI and the ISAPI interfaces?

Aprelium Technologies - FAQ
Starting from version 2.0, Abyss Web Server supports dynamic documents generation through ISAPI extensions (besides the classical CGI applications interface.) ISAPI extensions are loaded on-demand and become resident in the server process space. This enhances significantly the performance as an extension is only loaded once and does not require any communication overhead with the server. See similar questions...

What's the difference between the CGI and the FastCGI interfaces?

Aprelium Technologies - FAQ
Starting from version 2.3, Abyss Web Server features support for applications and interpreters conforming to the FastCGI specification. A FastCGI application or interpreter is loaded when needed by the web server, it executes a script, and sends its output back to the server. But instead of having its process automatically unloaded from the system as with CGI, it remains in sleeping state waiting for another request from the web server. See similar questions...

What's the difference between the FastCGI and the ISAPI interfaces?

Aprelium Technologies - FAQ
FastCGI interpreters and applications deliver performances comparable to (if not better than) their ISAPI extensions counterparts. Because they run in another process, they cannot affect the server and crash it if they have problems. This makes their use not prone to stability problems ISAPI extensions may cause.
