Our trips are three to four hours long, depending upon the location of the whales. While the whales remain the primary focus of this tour, you will also observe other marine wildlife as well as experience the beautiful waterways of Southern Vancouver Island.

The most common whale migration period is late December through early April. During this time numerous female whales are migrating north with their young calves. Whale watching tours depart from Pillar Point Harbor, 4 miles north of Half Moon Bay, regularly during the peak season. Yes, land-based whale watching is very popular at Stradbroke. From May to November each year, the whales pass close by the coast on their annual migration from Antarctica to their calving grounds near the Great Barrier Reef. The rocky outcrops at Point Lookout are ideal vantage points for land-based whale watching. The whales pass close to the island, so it is usually possible to see them without the aid of binoculars.

Our trips range in price from our early bird special to our sunset whale watch. We charge a little more ($10) than the other boats because we offer a more personalized trip and we cover more area so you see more whales.

The official Hawaii whale season runs from December 15 to May 15. While whales are present during the beginning and end of the season, the peak time for whale activity is February to April. This is when the calves are born so there is much frolicking going on. It really is an amazing sight.

Dress warmly and wear flat shoes. If you wish to spend time on the outside decks of our vessels you may need light waterproof clothing depending on the sea conditions.

Any time of the day is good for seeing whales. The times when there are the least people are in the morning or evening, and that's usually when the weather is calmer as well.

Size, the bigger the better, size means less movement in the ocean, greater comfort and facilities on board. Time, is there enough time in the ocean to see the whales? a short trip may mean you get 10 minutes on the whales then its back to the wharf! Protection, if there is any wind or rain, being stuck on an exposed deck for 50 minutes on the trip back to the harbour is no fun.

Whales can stay under water for over an hour. When the Arctic Ocean freezes over, whales must search for open stretches of water to get a breath of fresh air.

Smile and count your lucky stars. If you are concerned that a whale is coming at your kayak and doesn't know that you are there, simply knock on the hull of the kayak and they will get the message. Our philosophy is that we do not approach within 100m of a whale, nor do we encircle whales should we see them. Blue whales grow to about 70 to 80 feet in the northern hemisphere (north of the equator) and 90 to 100 feet in the southern hemisphere (south of the equator). Female blue whales grow larger than males. The longest blue whale ever recorded was 110 feet.
