BOB: There are several temporary solutions such as human hairballs and commercial deer repellents, and we've had luck planting shrubs that aren't "preferred" deerfood, but it will actually take good deer-fencing to keep deer away. Also see our Pests webpage with a section on deer.

There are many things you can try to prevent deer from chewing your garden. If you have a fence around your property, deer tend not to try to jump it. They go to find easier food. Other, less drastic and costly solutions include sprays, noise makers, and even electric trip wires. A more natural approach to try is to plant lots of daffodils in and around your garden. Deer hate daffodils and usually stay far away from them.

There are common household remedies that sometimes work. Hang mothballs, strong soap or human hair in nylon stockings on the plants, or place chickenwire on the ground around the plants. Commercial deer repellents, available at the Nature Center Store, are the most effective when used consistently.

There is alot of homegrown and official advice on what you can do to keep deer from eating your plants. There's also lots of things you can buy that claim to repel deer. But, deer will anything if they're hungry enough. You can spend alot of money on repellants. People have mixed results with repellants, which seem to be affected by deer populations and food supply (deer will eat anything if they're hungry enough), to operator error -- oops, forgot to reapply after it rained.

Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by the bite of the deer tick, Ixodes dammini. These ticks are approximately the size of the period at the end of this sentence and are brown or black. They are found in the woods and brushy areas and transmit the bacteria to humans and dogs through a bite. Lyme disease is difficult to detect, diagnose and treat. The symptoms, which are often flu-like, include joint pain, fever, headache, nausea and fatigue.

BOB: As deer continue to overrun our residential landscapes, homeowners must be more concerned about protecting their ornamental plants, especially during winter when heavier browsing occurs. There are 3 ways to protect your plantings, and we feel proper plant choices and exclusion are the two that work the best in the long run. Here are your 3 choices: Exclusion - Through the use of fencing or mesh, keep the deer away from plants.

New England gardeners are not alone in being plagued by large, hungry creatures with antlers; but it's still a very serious problem in many areas. When the question was presented to the New England Gardening Forum, some Garden Web members respond

Plant damage is rare. Our roof cleaning mixture is definitely robust. We will take every precaution to prevent damage to plants, shrubs and grass. We will wet and cover possible affected areas with plastic tarps in advance. As the job progresses we will rinse as required to protect vegetation and then rinse some more. The rinsing dilutes the mixture enough that we don’t have much to worry about.

You always plant more of the things you like than the things you don’t; that stands to reason. But here’s a formula I use as an all-around rule. Row crops - carrots, radishes, parsnips - are planted in a row whose length equals your height, or a six-foot row for sons over thirteen years of age and for fathers; one-half that length for mothers and daughters over fifteen; a third that length for any children under fifteen.

Most plants with a milky sap or fragrant foliage are avoided by deer. That said, deer don't read lists!

Each individual plant's growth will vary and will be selected as to address your needs and what will enhance your property in the appropriate way.

Most chemicals will deter deer to some extent. However, when the population is high (as it is now due to the mild winters recently), a dog or a fence may be the only cure. Rhododendrons with a heavy indumentum (fuzz on the underside of the leaves) are not popular with deer and are usually not bothered. Some of the cultivars known as "Yaks" have this indumentum. Among the most popular plants are 'Mist Maiden' and 'Ken Janek.

In as early as after two weeks of daily servings, however the greatest benefit may be after 2 to 3 months of daily servings.

While it may be beneficial, only anecdotal evidence for canines exists. However small animal studies (rodent) have been performed and are published in mainstream scientific peer reviewed literature.

Although manatees are herbivores, sometimes sea squirts, mollusks or any of several species of zooplankton can be inadvertently eaten while the manatee feeds on seagrasses.

Animals eating flowers or other garden plants are common problems. There are several methods you can employ to keep your garden safe from foraging animals. The most effective, long-term solution is to install fencing around your garden. It should be at least 4 feet high and ideally buried 12" below ground. This will discourage digging animals such as woodchucks. But even an 18" high fence should keep rabbits out. Remove any brush piles that may be attracting wildlife.

A - Choosing “deer resistant” plants would be a wise decision. There are many plants available for use in the landscape that deer tend to avoid. Commercial deer repellants and fencing may also be necessary. For a list of appropriate plants see Deer Resistant Plants . (top)
