What is a micron and why should I care about small particles?

Dwyer Oil Since 1875: Frequently Asked Questions
A micron is 1/25,000th of an inch. A human hair is about 150 micros; the smallest thing that can be seen with the naked eye is about 10 microns. It is the largest particles, above 5.0 microns, that cause equipment problems and are what most filters are able to catch. However, 98% of the particles in the air are smaller than 1.0 micron. These "sub-micron" particles are not caught by most filters and get through our bodies' natural defenses when inhaled.

How small is a micron?

Kronos
One micron is 1/25,000 of an inch; a 0.1 micron particle is 1/250,000 of an inch (human hairs are between 30 and 120 microns). See similar questions...

How small is a micron and why does it matter?

Blueair Frequently Asked Questions
One micron is 1/25,000 of an inch. To understand just how small this is, consider that human hairs measure between 30 and 120 microns. Dust mite allergen measures from .1 to .3 micron and staphylococcus bacteria measures .7 micron. The size of a given particle helps to determine the degree of potential threat to human health. Particles ranging from .3 to .9 micron present the greatest health concern. See similar questions...

Is a micron the same as a micrometer?

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions about the metric system
A micrometer (mi?CROM?e?ter) like this can measure distances to accuracies specified in micrometers (MI?cro?me?ters). Here, the accuracy of 0.002 mm is equal to 2 ?m. A micrometer is, of course, one millionth of a meter or a thousandth of a millimeter. The micron, symbol ?, was originally a special name for this distance, but the name and symbol were officially eliminated in 1968, so it's no longer correct to use microns. See similar questions...

These are available in a range of sizes appropriate for volumes ranging from milliliters to liters. Pore sizes are readily available at 0.1 ?M and these have been widely used by major diagnostics companies. See similar questions...

Sometimes I have small particles clogging my faucets and shower head. What is this material?

City of Mesquite - Utilities
If the material looks or feels like a plastic product, it is the dip tube located in the hot water heater. Many plastic dip tubes deteriorate with time and must be replaced. It is recommended that a licensed plumber perform this task. This became a common problem when manufacturers began using plastic dip tubes some years ago. If the particles do not appear to be plastic and crumble easily in your hand, they are from mineral build up in the hot water heater. See similar questions...

There are small white particles clogging the aerator on my faucet. What are they?

Central Arkansas Water/source/faq
The white particles are possibly pieces of the dip tube from your hot water heater. Several manufacturers of hot water heaters used polypropylene dip tube between 1993 and 1996. These dip tubes have a tendency to fail and break up. If you run out of hot water quickly, this is a sign your dip tube has failed. Another test is to clean the aerator and then run only cold water. If the particles do not appear, run you hot water and see if the particles appear. See similar questions...

How are your particles made?

Seradyn | Technical Support | FAQ
Seradyn microparticles are made by emulsion polymerization. For plain polystyrene microparticles, the ingredients are water, styrene, buffer, anionic surfactant, and initiator. When mixed together, the surfactant emulsifies the styrene into the water phase. Upon heating, the initiator forms free radicals which cause polymerization of the styrene into polystyrene. The polymer chains are insoluble in water and form spheres, which are stabilized by the negatively-charged intitiator end groups. See similar questions...

What is micron rating?

Product FAQs : Air Filters, Oil Filters and Fuel Filters :: ...
A measure of the pore size in the filter media. Expressed as either ‘Nominal’ or ‘Absolute’. Nominal Rating relates to the percentage of particles at a given size that a filter can capture ie. 10 microns at 90% means it will remove 90% of particles 10 microns in size. Absolute refers to the removal of all particles at a given micron size and larger ie. 20 micron absolute means 100% of particles 20 microns or greater will be captured. See similar questions...
