All rooms are single, unless you request to share a room with another student. The exception is if you are accompanied by a registered, non-student guest. All people staying in the dorm rooms must be registered. Space permitting, non-students may register at a cost of $450.00 and must accompany a registered student. This will entitle the non-student to a double-occupancy room (with enrolled student), board and evening activities.

The vast majority of students here are assigned to standard double rooms. We do, however, have a handful of rooms that are over-sized and designed to accommodate three students. The fee for these rooms is slightly less. These rooms are not double rooms that have been converted to triples to accommodate overcrowded conditions. Single rooms are scarce on the Midtown campus and in several of our Westside buildings.

Depending upon the number of beds per room at our tours’ lodging sites, solo travelers will be paired with a roommate, or can request their own room directly from our website. Most rooms have either two single beds or one double bed. This mean that they can accommodate two people. If you take one of these rooms alone then the single supplement is charged so that the lodge/spa/resort doesn't lose too much revenue.

Single occupancy rooms are generally only available in hotels and involve a surcharge. Country inns (ryokan and minshuku in Japan) usually involve shared accommodation (same sex). If you are a single person and book one of our trips then you are not obliged to pay the single supplement. However if you request a room (or tent on some of our Armenian tours) to yourself then this should be requested at the time of booking and a supplement paid.

The majority of our incoming students live in quadruple-occupancy rooms (otherwise known as "quads"). Most of our "quad" rooms are located on South Campus (in Roberts, McClure, and Gregory Halls). In these halls, quads are actually two double rooms that are connected by closet spaces and a private bathroom for the four residents of the room.

Single kayaks provide greater maneuverablity than doubles. Doubles can be faster than singles. Doubles may be able to carry more gear, but keep in mind that they need to carry more than twice as much gear for this to be true. A double will require the use of a rudder to steer.
