Attend a Tree Planting Demonstration to learn how to plant a tree to Our City Forest standards. This is required before receiving your tree from us. Step-by-step guidelines are also available here. OCF will assess planting sites approximately one week after the tree is planted. If the tree is not planted properly, we may ask that the tree be dug out and replanted.

The Forest Service "Plant-A-Tree" Program permits individuals and groups to donate money for planting trees on National Forests. The trees may be planted to memorialize loved ones or to commemorate special events such as births, weddings, or anniversaries. For a suggested minimum donation of $10, which pays for 10-15 seedlings, donors receive a certificate acknowledging their gift. If desired, the name of the person in whose honor the donation is made will appear on the certificate.

The trees will be 2 year old, 40- 60cms transplants. This is the size conventionally supplied by forest nurseries for woodland planting schemes as they transplant most successfully. Native broadleaves that are indigenous to the area will be planted, usually oak, ash or birch.

The collection database is on the computer in the FOSA office. A staff member can help search under the scientific or common name, and the database provides coordinates that refer to the grid map location.

First, dig an oversized hole, generally twice the width and the depth of the plant. Fill hole partially with peat moss and topsoil. Place the shrub or tree in prepared hole. Back fill with remaining soil, bringing the top of the hole and the top of the ball of the shrub or tree level. Second, tamp down after filling the hole and water thoroughly to remove air pockets that might have formed during planting. Third, mulch around the new planting with 2-3" of fresh mulch.

Street trees are trees that are planted between the curb and abutting property line. One 24-inch box size tree should be planted for every 30 feet of street frontage. Put the seeds (cedar nuts) into water of room temperature for 2-3 days. If any seeds remain on the surface of the water level throw them out (usually they are either empty or bad for planting). Place the seeds in cold storage by putting the substance with seeds in an environment of 0 degree temperature (lower part of the refrigerator) for a period of no less then four months. Access to air during the storage period is essential.

Potted citrus trees can be planted almost anytime of the year. Fall and Spring are two of the better times. Since newly planted citrus trees are not as cold hardy as more mature ones, Fall planting should be done at least two (2) months before freezing temperatures can be expected.

We do not encourage this, primarily because the young trees will need to be weeded for the first 3 years. This entails the spraying off of all vegetation from around the base of the tree to allow unhindered growth. There are also issues regarding the woodland ecology; many flower species will be inappropriate in a native wood.

The Empress Tree can be planted throughout the year in various areas of the country. It can be planted while dormant in the winter or while growing in the spring, summer or fall. We recommend that when you receive your tree, you care for it in a gallon container so that it can adjust to your environment. Also, all of our trees come with our “Quick Start Grower’s Guide” so that your tree has the best possible growth.

The hole does not have to be very big -- 8-12" in diameter for a 2 ft. tree, 24 to 30" in diameter for a 10 ft. tree. The hole should be about as deep as it is wide. If your soil is very sandy, you can add compost or other organic material to aid in water retention. If your soil is highly compacted, rough up the sides and bottom of the hole with a shovel to help the roots break into the surrounding soil. Plant the tree at the original soil level.

You can request that a street tree be planted on the right-of-way by Urban Forestry. We prefer a cost sharing partnership with you. You pay for 50% of the wholesale cost of the tree, Urban Forestry will pay the other 50% and plant the tree. We also require that you water the tree once per week during the growing season, and will provide more detailed information at the time the tree is planted.

Most trees and shrubs do best when transplanted in the spring or fall, however I have found that with proper care you can transplant most pants just about any time. One more note about planting, a plant can be put in the ground any time of year as long as the ground is not frozen. It is the act of cutting the roots of a plant that is can kill it. A plant purchased at the nursury has already been transplanted and can be put in the ground any time as long as it gets watered.
