The generic syntax for URIs is defined in RFC 3986. The path part of a URI is based on the pchar production and near as I can tell "[" and "]" are explicitly illegal in a pchar (although they can appear elsewhere) and "{" and "}" are not allowed to appear anywhere in a URL without URL Encoding.
