Eye cancer is a very rare kind of cancer that starts in or on the eye (on the surface, on the iris, or within the eye beneath the retina) or in the skin around the eye (the eyelid). Because it is so rare, it is best for a person diagnosed with eye cancer to seek treatment from someone who specializes in this field. A person can ask their doctor to refer them to an eye cancer specialist.

There are different kinds of eye cancers. Below are some of the places near or on the eye where cancers can grow and the types that may be present on each one of these places: Eyelid tumors. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of eyelid cancer. It can be removed with surgery. Other types of eyelid tumors include squamous cell carcinoma, sebaceous cell carcinoma, and malignant melanoma. Tumors that grow on the surface of the eye (conjunctival tumors).

Just like a raised freckle on the skin, a nevus can occur inside your eye. And, like a nevus on the skin, a choroidal nevus can grow into a melanoma. This is why your ophthalmologist will examine your eyes on a regular basis (at least every six months) and use photography and echography to check if the nevus has changed in size.

Most people who have an eye cancer do NOT become blind or significantly visually impaired. Our visual function usually is described in terms of visual acuity and visual fields in BOTH eyes. Visual acuity is expressed as a fraction; the top number refers to the distance you are from the eye chart (usually 20 feet). The bottom number indicates the distance at which a person with normal eyesight could read the line.

Current risk estimates suggest that 1 out of 3 Americans will develop some type of cancer in their lifetime. This means that 2 out of 3 Americans will not develop cancer.

Sometimes it is easier to match the eyelids if both are operated. You must be examined before Dr. Schiller can answer this question for you.

In the early phases of AMD, sometimes the signs and symptoms may appear in only one eye. However, AMD is a “bilateral” disease meaning that you have it in both eyes. In other words, the signs of the disease eventually appear in both eyes.

Eye exams are recommended periodically, with the interval differing for various age groups. In the first three years of infancy, a child should have vision checked along with normal pediatric checkups. Between the ages of three and six (the most crucial period of eye development) an eye exam should be scheduled every year or two. After that period, until adulthood, exams should be scheduled as necessary. During the twenties one should have at least one exam.
