The main difference between the dances arises in the footwork. Many people will say that the footwork for Lindy Hop is more advanced than East Coast Swing, but there is a good reason for that. Lindy Hop originated in 1920's and 1930's through an evolution of Tap, Jazz, and Charleston. From, and along with Lindy Hop, a number of other dances evolved, including Carolina Shag, West Coast Swing, Jitterbug, and Balboa. Often different dance styles are suited to different styles or speeds of music.

East coast swing is the basic of all the swing dances and we suggest starting with this dance if you are a beginner. It is danced in a circular motion and resembles the jitterbug. The west coast swing is California's state dance. The woman dances in a slot and is usually danced to either blues or country western music. East Coast Swing or "Triple Swing" evolved from the Lindy Hop and is the base for all other swing dances. It is a circular dance that is danced with a gentle bounce that is very grounded and smooth. Partners keep their weight pitched forward and rock away from each other on the "rock steps." There is less convection on the west coast in part because of the cool water temperatures off shore in the Pacific Ocean.
