DVD recorders can record video in resolutions ranging from DVD quality to VHS quality depending on the recording speed used, somewhat analogous to the different recording speeds on a VCR. Although there is some variation from manufacturer to manufacturer, DVD recorders typically can record in one hour, two hour, four hour, and six hour speeds. The one hour speed will be very close, if not the same, as DVD quality, while the four and six hour speeds will be more like VHS SP and EP respectively.

RCA didn't use Lines of Resolution in their CED specifications, but a bandwidth of 3 MHz translates to about 240 Lines, the same resolution as VHS, but less than the 425 Lines of LaserDisc and 500 Lines of DVD. The subjective evaluation of people familiar with all these formats is that CED is better than VHS, but not as good as LaserDisc or DVD.

VHS/DVD recorder combos are on the way from several makers, including Sansui and GoVideo (both of which may be available by the end of 2003). Panasonic has tentative plans to introduce one into the Japanese market in late 2003. If well received, you may see a similar unit on U.S. and European store shelves in 2004.

DVD Video employs a higher sampling rate than even audio CD's, producing fuller, more textured sound. Because DVD audio is recorded and stored digitally, it surpasses VHS in reproducing the "surround" aural experience of the cinema at home. DVD Video can also offer up to eight alternate audio tracks, which can feature foreign language translations of movies and music videos or other special audio commentary, and up to 32 sub-titles or karaoke tracks.

It's generally not a good idea to route the video from your DVD player through your VCR. Most movies use Macrovision protection, which will cause problems such as a repeated darkening and lightening of the picture. See 1.11 and the Video RF section of 3.2 and for more info.

Most standard VCRs have unstable timing (aka poor time base) which causes this problem. The remedy is to purchase a VCR with a Time Base Corrector built in, add an external Time Base Corrector or use the CenterStage 2 model which has a built in Time Base Corrector.

DVD-V has the same NTSC vs. PAL problem as videotape and laserdisc. The MPEG video on DVD is stored in digital format, but it's formatted for one of two mutually incompatible television systems: 525/60 (NTSC) or 625/50 (PAL/SECAM). There are three differences between discs intended for playback on different systems: picture size and pixel aspect ratio (720x480 vs. 720x576), display frame rate (29.97 vs 25), and surround audio (Dolby Digital vs. MPEG). Its neither a code implementation nor an operating system, but a stable definition of a programming interface that those systems supporting the specification guarantee to provide to the application programmer.

DVD contains high quality digital video, and in image superiority can beat the long outdated poor performer of the old analogue VHS any day. The audio can also be of hugely superior quality, even better than CD, and can also include a multiple channel soundtrack. Performance of the DVD does do not diminish with use, like a VHS tape does. There is no physical contact in the reading of the disc, and so nothing to wear out.

The only two units that feature an AM/FM tuner are the Sony MZ-F40 MD player (released in May 1997) and the new Sony MZ-G750 MD recorder (released beginning of 2001).
