For a coffee table aquarium, this calcualtion includes the air gap between the top of the water and the glass top. The "beneficial" or good bacteria growing in the experiment should keep the water from being cloudy, but "bad" bacteria will cause it to cloud. Mainly you may have to change part of the water (use tap water but put conditioner drops in to remove chlorine or let it stand out overnight). Also you need to correct WHY it became cloudy. Well in some ways it can be in any non-toxic container that can hold water, but some things just work better than others. I prefer glass tanks. But I'm old fashioned. Most of my tanks are the plain old rectangular glass fish tanks. There are a lot of fancy new tanks with bowed fronts and different shapes. Most tanks are pretty well suited to do the job. Students are probably feeding too much fish food. They only need to put a small pinch in every day or even every other day. The snails are able to cope with small amounts of algae and decomposing organism matter but too much food is beyond them. For salt water fish, Morton recommends using commercially prepared seawater (marine) mixtures, as they should contain the proper ratio of trace minerals.
