The efficiency of central air conditioning units is governed by U.S. law and regulated by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). Every air conditioning unit is assigned an efficiency rating known as its “seasonal energy efficiency ratio” (SEER). The SEER is defined as the total cooling output (in British thermal units or Btu) provided by the unit during its normal annual usage period divided by its total energy input (in watt-hours) during the same period.

of January 1st, 2006, no units with SEER ratings lower than 13 will be produced in the USA. this means that after that date, the minimum SEER rating you can purchase will be 13 SEER. At Furnace Factory Direct Inc. we recommend purchasing the minimum SEER prior to January 1st 2006. The price levels and efficiencies make it the best return on investment.

The least efficient unit available today is a 10 SEER system. This unit is probably 40%-50% more efficient than a 15 year old air conditioner. A 12 SEER unit uses 10% less electricity than a 10 SEER and a 14 SEER uses 20% less electricity than a 10 SEER. Usually the higher SEER (more expensive) systems are quieter and have a better warranty.

Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. The higher the SEER rating, the more energy efficient the system will be.

SEER is Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating. It's basically a benchmark that tells you how efficient a piece of equipment may be. Mostly you would use this rating when comparing different brands of equipment, to ensure that you're comparing similar products. A SEER is an indicator of how much electricity you can expect the unit to use - the higher the SEER, the more efficient the unit, and the less power it consumes while cooling your house.

This is a complex question, and there is no simple answer. From a project perspective, performance was one of the key requirements for the Seer toolset and this requirement has filtered down through all aspects of Seer's design. Perhaps, the simple answer is that the of core of Seer has been written in ANSI C with all internal structures being C based. This as you would expect has a significant impact on performance.

The capacity of an air conditioner should not be confused with the efficiency rating. New units of like capacity cool equally as well regardless of efficiency rating. However, the unit with the higher efficiency rating uses less electricity.
