Hiring an escort to travel to Nepal in place of the adoptive parents is not possible. The Nepalese government requires that prospective parents formally apply for adoption in person, thus requiring both parents to travel on the first trip. The U.S. embassy requires that at least one adoptive parent be present to finalize the adoption at the end of the second trip, which means that at least one parent must travel.

Getting to Ta'u from Ofu is generally difficult if not impossible. Oftentimes, the plane stops at Ta'u first and then crosses over to Ofu. If Ta'u is in your travel plans, please work your itinerary so that you arrive there first and fly onward to Ofu. Don't be surprised if the airline makes you fly back to Pago and then onward to Ta'u later in the day or even the next day.

Escorting may be possible for the Kazakhstan program's second trip, although Adoption Associates, Inc. strongly recommends that parents travel to bring their child(ren) home. Families traveling on their second trip will be able to bring their child home much more quickly than when using an escort, since using an escort can add an additional four to six weeks of USCIS paperwork. For a child, making the transition and adjustment as he/she leaves the caregiver can be a traumatic experience.
