Math Department Computing FAQ
A long time ago, samba 2.x was installed on the unix side. It allowed one to easily map unix files as a PC drive (usually s: for stokes, the machine it ran on). It worked really well, I didn't have to be involved in any way, it was fast enough, it was easy and everyone was happy. stokes, however, was starting to show its age. We then bought a couple of big honkin' dual-processor linux boxes. The idea was that samba would be moved to one of the boxes.

I can lock my unix/pc screen and keep the machine exclusively for myself. Isn't that cool?

Math Department Computing FAQ
No, it's discourteous to others, it's annoying to me, it makes me seriously wonder whether I should just remove the lock features altogther and it makes puppies cry. The purpose of keeping the lock bits around was to insure that users could lock the machine temporarily (i.e., for as long as it takes to run to the bathroom, make a phone call, have a smoke, etc). It was not meant as a way to run simulations on open-access machines or to allow exclusive access to one person.

CS 121: FAQ
Yes, you may program on the machine of your choice, but at least for now, you'll need to access your leland account on a sweet hall machine to download and submit your code, using some combination of ssh, scp, ftp, etc. On Mac OS X and Linux machines, this is fairly simple (using a terminal). On WinXP machines, this may require installing Putty or Cygwin. If you're really ambitious, you could set up a CVS account in your afs space and then use eclipse to access it. :)

Why doesn't Exceed work to get into the Unix system?

Linux FAQ
Our Unix system is very old and the new authentication software has to have pam (pluggable authentication module,) support for any connection type. Exceed used XCMDP to connect to the Unix system. XCMDP is no longer a valid authentication method. Exceed does still work but in passive mode. Passive mode is when you run Exceed and don't pick a server, instead you click the 'passive' button and then run a third party ssh client, such as putty.

The DUNS for the most part uses standard tools that are available on all of the different variants of Unix, so porting from one system to another system is generally not a problem.
